See the real Alethiometer
Posted on by Ian

The Real Alethiometer ThumbJavno reports that to mark the release of The Golden Compass movie in Japan, Japanese jeweller Tanaka Kikinzoku has unveiled an 18 carat gold alethiometer which his firm has developed at a cost of $280,000 US.
The compass measures 8.3cm in diametre, weighs 900gms and is based on the design of the alethiometer used in the film.

It has taken seven craftsmen about a year to make the model and it is intended that the alethiometer be displayed at the upcoming Japanese premiere. Unfortunately, there are no plans to sell the model.

You can read the story in full here.

Nice ‘n’ shiny. I did imagine the alethimeter a bit battered when reading the books. Bah, it’s still a work of art though.

  9. Witch-girl says:

Hey, I totally wish that I could try to make my own one of those, somehow…And it might sound pretty dumb, but since I paint blank pottery a whole lot for people and such, I wonder if I could even paint the face of the alethiometer, complete with all the little intricate symbols and stuff, on a plate or bowl? With a black background, maybe, that has some little flakes of gold glitter in it, like Dust…?

    *thinks really good and hard*

It has to be worth Septupdecillions (I could have just made that up, but who cares about figures when His Dark Materials are involved)

They should make the subtle knife and the amber spyglass too and the spyflies as well!
