Contest! – Rough Guide to His Dark Materials
September 6, 2007
The Rough Guide to His Dark Materials is released in the UK tomorrow. The book explores “the beguiling world” of Philip Pullman’s trilogy; covering his influences from physics to John Milton. It promises to detail the story behind the filming of The Golden Compass and includes a “tour” of Oxford’s Exeter College, Geneva (home of the Magisterium) and Cittagazze. The publishers have been so kind as to offer several copies for enterprising fans. If you want to win a copy – and are willing to divulge your postal address – simply answer this question below.
Here’s the question: In the books, the king of the bears is called Iofur Raknison. What has his name been changed to in the upcoming movie?
Send your answer by email (webmaster@bridgetothestars.net) along with your name and address. We’ll draw 5 entries out of a hat when the contest closes in one week (12th Sept). Good luck!

Among the season’s best

The Times lists the Golden Compass among this upcoming season’s best films to look out for, among other book-to-film adaptations like Ian McEwan’s Atonement and Khaled Hosseini’s the Kite Runner. “Believe the hype? New Short Story with Lee and Iorek
September 2, 2007
French community member Cittagazze have a lengthy interview with Philip Pullman which covers a wide range of subjects. On the movie, Pullman reaffirms his admiration for the cast and design; talks a little about his favourite books as a child and an adult; music, and love.

Questions about Pullman’s plans for new His Dark Materials’ books reveal that the author has just finished a short book, due to be out this spring in the UK. Named Once Upon a Time in the North, the book will focus on Lee Scoresby and Iorek Byrnison, in the pair’s younger days – says Pullman, “When we see them for the first time with Lyra, Lee is not that old: he’s fifty, sixty, something like that, so they’ve [he and Iorek] known each other for a long time. But I wanted to write a story when they first met as they were young, and I’ve just written it.”
Like Lyra’s Oxford, the book will again features some “extra-bits” – Pullman says he has been working on a “game-board” to come with it. The Book of Dust appears to still be on the cards for a later release, with Pullman pondering including more stories about Will.
