Eva Green on The Golden Compass
Posted on by Will

Empire have an interview with Eva Green on the eve of the Bafta awards – for which she has a nomination – and the actress, playing Serafina Pekkala in The Golden Compass, had some things to say on the movie. “I read the Philip Pullman trilogy and really liked the role she's strong and hundreds of years old. She is a witch who is a guide, philosopher and friend to Lyra. It is quite a mysterious role which I found attractive. I wanted to make her [Serafina] sound quite other worldly and yet from another age. I worked with my voice coach, Roisin Carty to create a sort of medieval Scandinavian drawl.” Read more.

  1. Corsair of Umbar says:

    Medieval Scandinavian drawl.Sounds, er interesting.

  2. Silverfist says:

Yeah……ok. Scandinavian Drawl. Not quite how i pictured it in my mind, but as long as she doesn't sound like a Mideval Scandanavian Draco Malfoy (however that sounds), i'm fine.

  3. jesssia says:

so… is the last A in BAFTA awards? [/nitpick]

  4. Witch-girl says:

A Medieval Scandinavian drawl?! How lovely! 🙂

  5. Mockingbird says:

Seems quite right, it can't be *our* world and I remember sraffies going on about how the actress should be Scandanavian. I hope it's not campy though like Angelina Jolie's Translyvanian drawl in Alexander. *shudders at that movie*

Eva Green seems to have good judgement so it'll probably be good.

  6. Green Ink says:

As much as I like the originality of the choice of a medieval scandinavian drawl, can I just be the one to point out that the name Pekkala suggests that she would be Finnish?
Not that it matters that much.

  7. Willl says:

    *glares at jess*

Green Ink – Finland is in Scandinavia anyway.

  8. Jamie Sutherland says:

Why wouldn't you imagine Serafina to have a Scandinavian drawl? She is most probably Finnish, which is a Scandinavian country.

  9. Green Ink says:

Of course it is, but I should perhaps have said that Finnish is not related to any of the other other languages of the region (well, except the Sami language), and Scandinavian made me think of a Germanic language rather than a Finno-ugric one. Drawl makes me think of Swedish particularly, rather than the harsher sounds of Finnish. And now I seem to be off on a very odd tangent, so I'll just leave it and say that we'll see eventually what it will exactly mean: 'a medieval scandinavian drawl'.

  10. fred69 says:

You are perfectly right Green Ink. Finnish is not related to the other scandinavian languages.

Swedish, Norwegian and Danish are parts of the indo-european family of languages (and parts of the Germanic sub-family as you mentioned, like German, Dutch and….English).

When Finnish is part of the small Finno-Ugric family.

There are only four languages in Europe that are not indo-european :
Finish, Estonian and Hungarian (Magyar) that are Finno-Ugric languages.

And the fourth one is the Basque language (spoken in the Basque provinces in Spain and in France) that is of an unknown origin, and is not related to any other language spoken in Europe.

  11. vifetoile says:

WHO CARES. THEY'RE WITCHES. They've probably got their own languages. And for all we know Finland is the dominant culture of all of Northern Europe in Lyra's world.
As long as she doesn't sound overtly stupid or cheap and wind up demeaning the on-screen persona of Serafina Pekkala, WHAT'S THE BIG DEAL?

  12. silvertongue says:

    hear hear =)

  13. Mockingbird says:

    There is no big deal…

Green Ink was just pointing something out, he didn't say he thought it was a travesty without parallel.

Well, details aside, I'm glad she chose the general ballpark of Scandanavian, which would certainly be more Finnish than many other accents she could have chosen.

  14. vifetoile says:

I'm sorry. I guess I was rather rude. I wonder what Kaisa is going to look like… your average snow goose is a pretty normal-looking bird.
