Cross Keys Bridge is Swinging
Posted on by

Film crews will be in the town of Spalding at the weekend shooting scenes at the Cross Keys Bridge for The Golden Compass film. A barge, which has been shipped in specially for the scene from Lincolnshire, will be shot sailing through the open swing bridge. Publicist Ms Darcy said of this weekend:: “We have a secondary unit in the area filming some shots which will be dropped into the main action. We have done some filming in Greenwich and have the main unit at Chatham and Nicole won't be back with us until November.” Read more.

aw… november!oh well at least they have got that far into the book so quickly!

  2. Rudy says:

No new Nicole pics until November?!?!? After those pics of her in the red outfit I've been dying to see more. Oh well, good things come to those who wait. It's only a month anyway.

  3. rory says:

they could be shooting out of order like LotR did, mysterygal

  4. hoobits says:

Nearly all movies are shot out of order. Although much of what they seem to have shot to this point appears to be from before Lyra reaches Bolvanger.

  5. mysterygal says:

yeah ur right.how stupid of me……….I WANNA SEE A PIC OF DAKOTA!!! IM SOOOOO IMPATIENT

  6. KittyKat: says:

…Oh well, I guess the tiny, little scenes help make up a film too…

  7. Willl says:

Ben – reckon they'll be upping sticks and shooting the later stuff in Scandinavian soon? Or doing all the character stuff there in set, with just landscape shots?

  8. starcatcher says:

to mystergal-same!!!!! im reely curious. how old is dakota blue richards anyway?

  9. Muaethia says:

No Nicole till november… makes sense actually. They'll have done the london and oxford scenes for her and will have to wait until winter to go further north (more snow in winter) and shoot the battle scene she's in, the end of the film where Roger dies, and where she appears in Bolvanger.

They can then shoot the 'inside' scenes (like inside the station at bolvanger) indoors, when it begins to warm up in the north, about february-march time.

  10. Erin says:

Mysterygal and rory, every film that's made is not filmed in order. It would be ridiculous and impossible, keeping on having to return to locations ect. They film all the scenes that are needed in one location then go to the next location, and film the neccessary scenes there.

  11. hoobits says:

    Will-

I'm assuming by some of the credits listed on IMDb ( aerial director of photography- Norway) they will only be shooting 2nd unti aerial landscape and perhaps some on the ground, wide group shots with doubles in Scandinavia.

Logistaclly it wouldn't make sense to move a large part of the cast and crew literally north.
Just by shooting the Trollesund scenes in an English port (that kind of looks Norwegian) tells me that we will probably not see more than aerial and 2nd untit.

Although I am hoping they do some digital work on those Trollesund scenes to give it a sligthly more Scandinavian feel.

More or less it is probably safety reasons to not go up North. Kids and cold on a movie shoot don't bode well for insurance or health.

Consider the scene when Lyra and the Bolvanger kids escape into the snow.
There is really no reason why thay shouldn't shoot that on a stage. It is a night scene, which makes it easier to shoot, because imitating moon light tends to be easier than sun light.
Plus all those kids are British and sending them all up north, again, would not be cost effective.

  12. myterygal says:

    to hoobits:
you spelt 'thay'wrong :laughing:anyway…. if they are so far into the movie(well not SO far)won't there be SOME photographers around taking pics?i mean, every movie in the making will have someone taking pictures…dont they?AAAARRRRRGGGGGGG!!!!! :crying: i've looked up nearly every site for a pic of new actors but there's nothing!

  13. hoobits says:

Oh my god it is the end of the world! Honestly most people don't even read whole words now a days. Take a chill pill. Typos happen.

The question about photographers could be looked at several different ways.
Do you mean non production photographers IE fans, locals, press people?
Or do you mean an on set photographer? Someone who is there, apart of the production and taking official photos for later promotional use in print and on the web.

The reality is that even though this is a large production it is not that news worthy, thus not a lot of press are scrambling for pics, beyond the Kidman stuff (Probably to confirm whether she was pregnant or not)

New Line and company will decide when best to release material.
More likely than not they didn't release a photo of Dakota, because they want to make sure she has as much privacy as possible right now, so she is able to concentrate on her performance. All of this is a new experience for her and you wouldn't want a bunch of paparazzi mucking it up. Plus I'm sure they have good security on set.

At this point all we can do is wait.

They have their reasons and all we can do is speculate.

  14. Alewyn says:

    …and anyways…
i like how the "read more" was 2 buttons, that was exciting

i also like how we get all worked up every week when there's a new set

  15. KittyKat: says:

    Dakota is 12, starcatcher.

  16. Mel says:

This is a off topic question but does anyone know the actual budget for this film? I've read several websites that claim it's 150 million but then I've seen many others that say it's about 83 million. That's quite a big difference and I was just curious to know which one was true. Thanks!!

  17. Azazel says:

I thought the budget was 150 million US$ (or it could be euros/pounds, i just know it was 150 million something) and 83 seems like a pretty random number. The usually reliable websites like IMDB are saying 150 million. Could be wrong. Don't know what it is in shekels.

  18. MCH says:

hee-hee! Each new location is one location closer to release date!!! 🙂

  19. Mockingbird says:

I'm sorry but what scenes occured at a bridge, except at the very end…

  20. Willl says:

The budget is $150 million, which is £80 million – which is probably where you heard the 83-mil figure.

  21. handcut says:

I imagine that this bridge scene is just incidental to the fens section of the journey. That bridge, as a matter of fact, is only 10 mins up the road from me! So I should be off with my camera to get Lyra's first pic LOL

  22. MCH says:

handcut: Yay!!!!! If you do manage to get a picture, you know that everyone here will love you for ever and ever and ever!!! 😉

  23. handcut says:

Sorry guys, nothing to report 🙁 it wouldnt be hard to imagine the scene though, as it was a lovely blue day for filming.

  24. Azazel says:

Does anyone know if TGC is gonna come out in Israel? Just wondering. If not, I'll just import it in English, ut Hebrew is much easier.

  25. hoobits says:

    Azazel,

At this point there is no way of really knowing whether or not the film will be released in Israel, dubbed or not. It is just still too early in the process.

New Line has brokered outside distribution deals for a few countires (Taiwan and Japan) but to start selling most overseas rights with the film still in production and not quite enough to show yet is not the best move, unless there is a lot of interest from outside parties.

Though it will be a major tent pole film come next fall/winter so I'm sure the film will get some kind of release in Israel, at some point seeing as how the books were translated. It just depends on how New Line wants to release this thing. As wide as possible all at once or slowly over a few months.

  26. mysterygal says:

to hoobits: sorry about correcting you earlier…i just have i question for you….how are you knowing all this stuff?are you working with the director or something or are you getting this from another web OR are you just guessing? :wassat:

  27. hoobits says:

    no prob mysterygal. Really.

A lot of it it just knowing a lot about film sets and the industry. I just recently graduated from film school and have worked in the biz, so much of what I'm saying is just by the book stuff that all productions go through. I'm not saying I'm a know it all, but I like to think and proces this stuff.
It helps since I never made a solid contact at New Line to actually get on crew.
Any info about distrubution deals like Japan is on IMDb.
And some of it I'm just guessing or assuming by the way of how the business tends to work. I say when I'm guessing or assuming. I hope I make that clear.

So anyone get down to that bridge and snap a pic of the barge? I take it this is the Costa's boat.

  28. Azazel says:

    Thanks, hobbits.

  29. Mockingbird says:

Somebody on IMdb is saying that he knows an extra down in New Zealand who is playing a kid in a fight scene for a movie called 'His Dark Materials'…Can we get some verification on this? I can't imagine that they would go all the way to New Zealand…

  30. MCH says:

Mockingbird – no idea, but New Zealand does seem to be 'the place to film' at the moment, doesn't it? What with Lord of the Rings and Narnia and suchlike…

  31. Laurentalion01 says:

:wassat:what? now i think this is interesting. 🙂 newzeland again… maybe there is an evil conspiricy going on there… 🙁 where they kidnapp big celebs and force them to build a paridise for them. or maybe its just a filming hott spot! 😉

  32. hoobits says:

There has been no mention of going to New Zealand, which is a big thing that I think they would mention, and frankly it would not be cost effective. Why shoot a film that takes partly in the UK in NZ?
We already see they are using certain UK locations to double for certain Norwegian/Lapland locations, so why bother with a country completly on the other side of the world?

And who would hire an NZ kid just for an extra in a fight scene and fly him out to the UK?
The only angle I can see this happening at is if the kid is from NZ but currently lives in the UK.

  33. mysterygal says:

yeah your right but…………….. I LIVE IN NEWZEALAND!!!! really i do!! if there IS going to be some filming here(oh please oh please)i would definetly go to the scene and try to get some pics… really!!

  34. Mockingbird says:

hoobits said: "There has been no mention of going to New Zealand, which is a big thing that I think they would mention, and frankly it would not be cost effective. Why shoot a film that takes partly in the UK in NZ?"

That's why I said that I couldn't see why they would do that. Just wanted to see if anyone else had heard anything. I'm sure the IMdb poster was mistaken, I don't mean to make anyone over-excited. Down mysterygal .

  35. Mockingbird says:

One more thing: Films like Narnia and LOTR need expansive open lands, towering mountain ranges and all those good ol' fantasy landscapes, which is why they pick gorgeous New Zealand, I assume. I can't recall that Golden Compass would need that kind of setting.

  36. mysterygal says:

    🙂
