THis is the most fucked up thing i've ever seen. you pronounce Lyra LIE RA, Mrs. Coulter has BLACK hair, and you better put people who can act in your movie you sick and twisted vomitous masses.
Thank you, all of my fellow Bridge to the Stars readers, for watching my film. Please be aware that it is a fan trailer, a homage film if you will, to a book series we all enjoy. Accept the film – with its ever-present errors – as a gesture of respect, not of unprofessionalism or elitism. We amateur filmmakers thank you.

Fairly bad, but hey, it's a fan trailer, my expectations should be lower.
Also, you pronounced it DAY-mons. Pfff.
We should before judging this trailer acknowledge that it was produced by someone who can't possibly access all of the resources that New Line Cinema can. It is ridiculous to even expect anything that approaches a quality of film. We should appreciate it as a work of the fans despite how uncredible it seems in comparison to other trailers. The acting is not as refined as Hollywood, the cinematagrophy doesn't approach anything worthy of an Oscar nomination — but if you are disappointed in it, then I suggest you film something better than this. Then maybe you will respect how difficult it was to compile this alone. Anyways, despite the flaws, I was quite pleased by it. I especially liked the lighting in the scene where the master gives Lyra the alethiometer; I wouldn't be surprised if they used such lighting to convey the emotion of the scene in the movie! I also adored seeing Iorek and Lyra touch their hands/paws together during the sunset — SO CUTE. Excellent job on it! Watching this has only increased my excitement for news from the movie. 🙂

Hehe, that's what I meant. In the movie it was pronounced DAY, I know to pronounce it DEE-mons. 😉
Anyway, good for a thing made by just fans. The scenery's all good, I like that. And the thing at the beginning with the poetry and stiff. 🙂

Yes they did make the somewhat attrocious mistake of pronouncing Lyra's name wrong…but I did enjoy the first opening bits.
Anyway, I think it's quite nice that people are making little films like these.
Of course it isn't as exciting as it could be with New Line Cinema..but you managed quite well. Some scenes are really nice, especially the ones at the beginning..after..it's really clear that's a fan trailer (actors lack confidence in themselves and some scenes are really too long) but anyway, you tried to do something faithful and it's a good tribute !

I'm a little surprised by some of other members reaction… It seems it's always easier to criticize than to do something by oneself.
So, even if there are some little things that do not match with what I had imagined, I think it's the most ambitious trailer I've seen for HDM. I found the set of the church scene really amazing (where did you shot ?) and, if some have a lot of things to say against actors, I would like to remember it's the first trailer with a actors and "trues" dialogs. Of course it's not perfect, but I trully feel that the filmmaker was proud to do something about HDM.So, thanks for this.
What ruined the flow of it, for me, was really the insanely long "dark hooded figure" scene. They were slapping and pretend-fighting for what felt like hours. That definitely should have been left out.
Of ocurse, it's quite an ambtious project, and they did what they could with no special effects.
Thanks for your comments. To answer several questions:
I'm an undergraduate student in a college with a small communications department and this is a project to show my professor that I can indeed shoot and edit a short work. I didn't want to do the usual 'Go Team!' basketball or soccer highlight films; The Golden Compass held much more promise (and work). I was required to make it 5 minutes, hence some drawn-out scenes, and I have only one person (Lord Asriel) who has had acting training. That said, everybody involved was very enthusiastic, even if they had not read the series.
Why no daemons? It's simply not feasible for me and the amateurish quality of what would result would be far more of a detraction than an asset. Hence footage of animals alone – I actually filmed at a Chicago zoo for some of the trailer. Why the wrong pronunciation? Most American English words with the letters 'ae' are pronounced as in dAY. I simply followed form instead of looking it up as I should have. Mea culpa. Same goes for 'Lyra.' Mea maxima culpa.

We have professional directors stepping down because HDM is too ambitious for film, and I definitely felt that pressure as I tried to bring a bit of the wonder of the literature to life. My hope is that viewers see this as a homage and not as a 'real film' trying to 'really be' the exact adaptation of the book.
Where is the church scene filmed? At the gorgeous Chapel of the Resurrection on the campus of Valparaiso University in Valparaiso, Indiana – where I'm attending college.
I'm more than happy to discuss processes and purposes of this film; that's what the literature community is all about. And of course, this film is not meant to be a stand-alone product. We all interact with it, with me as creator, with the texts and Pullman, with our societies as we deal with issues raised in the text. So it's important that we talk and I'm more than happy to be involved in the worldwide conversation.
I kinda wish I could have had a little ferret or something crawling all over me. Unfortunately, we don't have access to them here in Valparaiso, Indiana.
I know I had a lot of fun helping Dan out with this trailer. Please keep in mind he worked really hard on it, and for a college student, the trailer is magnificent. 🙂 Yay Dan!

Actually you don't, if you read the author's note in Northern Lights, then you'll notice that the pronunciation of daemon as "de(e)mon" is quite clearly pointed out.
He said "prounounceD"! Not "pronounce".
Sorry Joe, I've been getting all my pronunciation from the audio books, so chances are I misheard him. Also, being an ignorant American, I have TGS rather than Northern Lights. But I am planning on purchasing the UK editions so I can read the real novel, unchanged. I reallym ust see this "author's note" which you speak of. 😉

Yeah the pronounciation was really bad in this, other then that it it was ok. But I've listened to the audio books and they are narrarated by PP himself so you are sure to have the proper pronounciation. But yeah it's not like "leera" (as in learing at someone) it's Lie (as in to lie down) and then ra. Also you pronounce deamon the same way as you do demon pretty much it's just the spelling is different.
Oh yeah and for sure take out the fight scene between what I'm guessing is supposed to be a gobbler and Lyra. That looked really bad and shouldn't be in there. It dragged on for way too long and just doens't fit.
I guess this defines the kind of reaction that the real filmmakers are going to get: the film might be a work of wonder but the fans will be picketing because Lee's accent leans more towards Utah than Texas…

When I tried to watch it, it just kept stopping and starting! With like a minute in between. I only got up to "wild abyss" and then got frustrated that it was taking so long. I have Flash, so I dunno why this happened. But the start (what I saw) was really good. The voice was perfect- nice and deep and slow. And the panning down from the sky was really good too!

This was absolute rubbish. It was totally unfaithful to the book, Lyra looked fifteen, the characters didn't look right and the pronounciation! :angry:

:crying: please no more i beg you, i love the books too much to see them mocked in such a terrible fashion, and whoever was reading in the beginning… the acting.. the filming… the stolen music… terrible… simply terrible… poor pullman… absolute rubbish…

Not good, looked cheesy and the music was bad. many things pronounced wrong, and to John, most of us friggin Americans pronounce daemons correctly just the people who made the trailer. 😉

Don't make the excuse that you're just an amateur film maker. My friend and I have made much better attempts at films without having to take clips from the discovery channel.
Hey, people, those are not the REAL trailors…. but you are right. Movies made from books are dreadfull most of the time. And Lyra does look too old. About pronounciatoin though, it does seem all wrong. Though DAYmons does sorta fit better then DEEmons. I don't know why… ?
