way younger
anyone have any idea where hes supposed to be?
Aeran: on 01/04/2007
first thing that came to my mind was the munitions factory...but that can't be it.
jen: on 01/05/2007
me too, i thought he was gonna be way younger.
sisus: on 01/05/2007
Where is he?

Silverfist: on 01/05/2007
Yup, way younger, and where IS he supposed to be?
Vaka: on 01/05/2007
I think he looks awesome!!
bc90: on 01/05/2007
oh no! i always imagined Scoresby to be this young, good-looking guy in his thirties....that's why it was so sad for me when he died because he wasn't old at all
: on 01/05/2007
really? I always read Lee & Hester as old... they talk about lots of "ifs" in their lives... I assumed that to mean they were "past their prime"
Nick: on 01/05/2007
I thought he said something about he'd not done something for fourty years in one of the books, but...
Aiya: on 01/05/2007
It says he hasn't seen his mother's ring for forty years . . .
So there.
fools: on 01/05/2007
yeah everyone imagining him younger... the last three posts pretty much sum up everything about how old he is supposed to be...haha.
fools: on 01/05/2007
oh, and i think he looks fantastic! :D
aklebury: on 01/05/2007
It almost looks a litle bit like he's inside a clock tower???
Where is he in this picture??: on 01/06/2007
He needs to be younger to fit his cool and snappy air.
: on 01/06/2007
I imagined him as a man in his late thirties..... Sam Elliot looks like his sixty
Marissa: on 01/06/2007
Sam Elliott is an amazing actor, and I was SO happy when he was cast as Lee. This is just as I pictured him. :D
: on 01/06/2007
I always imagined him as someone in his early 50s. For lyra's world, where medicine isn't as advanced, thats pretty old. Sorta like an adult version of Jim Taylor from the Sally Lockhart books.

noooooooooo i thought him lyk early 40's or sumfink & for some reaon blondish hair .. & clean shaven .. i dno mayb i just fogot the desriptions of the charactors in the books & made up my own lol
northern_lights_rocks!: on 01/07/2007
he could be a bit younger, but i think he shows the character very well
twerk_face: on 01/07/2007
arrrrggghhhhhh!!!! i am sooooo angry right now. EVERYTHING from this movie looks absolutely fantastic, EXCEPT for my favorite character. He is WAY too old. i imagined him very tall, lanky, skinny, thin moustache, in other words, THE WAY HE IS IN THE BOOK!!!! this is all wrong. oooooooo i am so angry i feel like i am about to pop.
rebecca: on 01/07/2007
AGREE WITH TWERK_FACE! i think he should be MUCH younger. like thirties? with dark brown hair. and that daemon of his better not be gangly. and jeez... he looks evil in this picture. i always pictured him relaxed and happy, almost like hester when she has her eyes half-closed.
Jammer: on 01/08/2007
Sorry, but he isn't young in the book, even though I imagined him younger, too. Oh well.
Iofur_raknison: on 01/08/2007
I think he looks perfect. Exactly as I imagined him, a kind of aging cowboy, a kind of Lee Van Cleef looking character.
Kabster: on 01/08/2007
I sorta pictured him with..er...less hair. Something more trimmed and well coloured. I always had this imaged of grey-ING hair not WHITE. o.o It kinda surprises me.
Niklas: on 01/08/2007
twer_face and Rebecca: ever imagined he might look that bad to you becouse he is your favorite.
I think It looks alright, who cares if he have a beard ore not, if he wouldent have have an equal number of people would be disapointed, the movie will never be YOUR vision of the book, let's just hope It stays as faithfull to the text as possible, i think it'l be just fine.
: on 01/09/2007
I imagined scorsby younger but am far from disappointed.
: on 01/10/2007
Wow, I think it's very juvenile to get so upset about the castind directors not being able to telepathically know exactly y'alls vision of Lee Scoresby and put him on the screen.
They cast who they thought was best for the part--and maybe Sam Elliot was their personal vision of Lee Scoresby.
Personally I saw more of a Viggo Mortenson character (Texan cowboy sort of thing), but I have not seen this man act yet, so I am perfectly open to being pleasently surprised by his performance.
Come guys. Let's be a little bit more open-minded here :)
WharfedaleRed: on 01/10/2007
Looks about right, worried about the scene though-can't think where it would be...hummm...
leeSfan: on 01/11/2007
I think that Lees perfect. Forget about the age. I know someone would have preferred someone like Nathan Fillian, but I think its important to remember Lees relationship with Serafina. He admits that he is growing old, and is past his prime. There is a hint at some sort of past between them that can't be restarted. Thsi suggests to me that Lee is certainly over forty as previous posts have noted, and possibly older. Lees age makes his eventual death even sadder. He doesn't die in slow motion with a rock soundtrack in the background. Its more sombre and elagiac than that. Remember as well that Philip Pullman thought that Samuel L. Jackson should play him and hes 58. I can think of few more dignified actors than Sam Elliot and the entire cast of this looks as if its been carefully thought out. Give the guy a break
Megann: on 01/11/2007
Yep, he look's wonderful. Is he inside a zepplin or something?
crazy_stunt_girl: on 01/11/2007
It must be a tower of some sort; notice the extra walking up the stairs behind his shoulder to his left. I have absolutly NO idea what part of the book this is unless it's somewhere in Trollesund in some additional, unimportant scene. One of my first thoughts had been that maybe it was a scene from the Subtle Knife when Lee goes to the Observatory to find out more about the whereabouts of Grumman, but we know that there hasn't been any filming for the next book, so I really am at a loss to explain it! It's the pictures like this that really make me mad that there's still a year left to wait!!! Arghh, this is going to be a LONG year!!
Reedie_Belacqua: on 01/11/2007
I've imagined him way younger too.. this is the character that does not fit at all woth the way i picterd it

Hikariness: on 01/16/2007
That would be Billy Conolly.
666: on 01/16/2007
I think Sam Elliott is the perfect cast for Lee Scoresby and it has to be an additional scene from Trollesund. My only problem is when writers change storys around and the Americans have already shied away from the religous overtones of the film which is what its all about... I personally cant wait to see the figure of "god" eaten by the cliff ghasts that will be a laugh. The figure of Lee played by Sam will be perfect there are not that many actors who will be able to play the Texan aeronaught so well he has the looks and perfect voice.. just wait and you will see............
Calypso: on 01/16/2007
I did imagine him a bit younger, but this Lee seems to grasp his personality and character just as well. C'mon you gotta love that the gnarly 'stache.

Imagined him younger, too, but he always talked to Hester like someone he'd known for half a century, so I guess older makes sense.
Azeria: on 02/03/2007
eugh. Lee is supposed to be old and Hester is supposed to be a lanky... scruffy(?) looking Hare. Lee is probably 50 + as he says he hasn't seen his mother's ring in 40 years. Read the books again.
Jrea: on 02/04/2007
I agree. Those saying Lee's meant to be young obviously need to read the books again.
Emily: on 02/09/2007
Yeah. Not sure about this . . . . when I heard they had cast Sam Elliott for Scoresby I thought it was perfect. I was well aware that Lee wasn't a young man (late forties, early fifties . . ) but I just didn't imagine him sooo old. I though more hardened and weathered looking than just plain old - like this pic. Feel a bit strange about this as it distorting 'my' picture of Lee Scoresby . . . hmmmmm
lilia: on 02/11/2007
NO!!! that can't be lee! he looks too old, wise and tidy! he is supposed to be younger, reckless, and scruffier! maybe it's just because of the angle of the picture... I really want to hear his voice, sometimes actors really don't look like the characters they are supposed to be but when they speek, they sound much better. maybe he is one of them.
robin: on 02/13/2007
he reminds me of the old cowboy guy from 'the big lebowski'.. it does seem different to the book description but i'm eagerly awaiting the film. oooh its gonna be goood

I imagined lee sort of tanned and weathered. Not like an arm chair man.
phil: on 03/23/2007
He's in a town in the great white north, standing on the crate where he stored his balloon. Lee was an old veteran of many wars. Maybe you pictured him younger becuae of your age.

your age being
Senza: on 03/28/2007
The age is about right, i guess, but i never imagined all the hair! I thought he'd be sorta a 5 o clock shadow guy, not a beard guy like that. But that's just me i guess. I also sorta imagined him wiry, which he might be, but it's covered up by the clothes.

He is thin, its just the angle of the picture. And Pullman said hiself Sam Elliot is the exact image of Lee.

My image of Lee was young and I know it's wrong, but that's what I think of him. =)

Lyra at heart age 13: on 06/14/2007
How is Touche chavy?? It is a highly intelligent and witty retort. I doubt a Chav would use that kind of sophistication. Do you know what the hell a chav is? It is an abbreviation for Council House and Violent. They also have the reputation to use their benefit money on designer clothing.
So I think you should shut up coz you don't know what you are talking about.
Witch_Queen: on 06/18/2007
Thanks Lyra at heart! I happen to use that remark alot and I am NOT a chav! How is Touche chavy? I can't imagine a chav saying that! I didnt know that chav was an abbreviation...

What would eventually happen to Mr. Scoresby's body is quite creepy for me. I wonder if they will show that scene in the movie. Lee looks just as much as I expect from a person from Texas not being stereotypical if I might say. Okay I confess, I really do not recall how would this person might look like.
McVinster: on 06/20/2007

Ama: on 06/29/2007
But Dakota has never even acted before. I'm positive that character did count when they were doing auditions. It's just helpful that the chosen girl already has a Lyra-ish personality. And the people who were judging, as well as Philip Pullman, did credit Dakota's nature as being very close to Lyra's.
Ama: on 07/02/2007
Yeah I know. I was just talking about how they *did* judge by character. I was using Dakota as the main example basically. So you know what Lyra at Heart looks like?
Ama: on 07/06/2007
Actually, Lyra at Heart /does/ seem kind of Lyraic personality wise. Lol.
And that's a good idea. Why not post a picture of yourself and see what we think?
Ama: on 07/11/2007
You were boasting right there. And I don't think she was serious about you showing us a picture of you.
Ama: on 07/13/2007
Well if you don't want to be a hypocrite, and want to be taken seriously and respectfully by society, you might want to try to avoid boasting. If you want to prove to someone that you aren't dumb, you should try showing that you're above such things as quarreling over who's stupider.
This is only my suggestion.
Ama: on 07/13/2007
At least she apologized for it. You went way over the edge in comparison anyway.
Lyra at heart age 13: on 07/15/2007
Well you got it half right. But I don't know what the hell your talking about for the first part. You are describing a fair weather friend there. I told you before you retarded little freak that I'm am not gonna waste my time explaining what talents, interests, and how intelligent I think I am to the likes of you.
I am some what impressed though that you managed to write all of that without using much slang or text writing. Kudos to you.
Ama: on 07/16/2007
What's the point in asking someone about their talents if you aren't going to believe them?
Ama: on 07/22/2007
You might want to do a spell check the next time you write an argument about how brilliant you are. Also you might want to avoid being redundant. Then you'll be a little more convincing.
Ama: on 07/23/2007
You should be able to spell quite well if you're "outstanding" in English.
Ama: on 07/25/2007
So if you're not trying to prove anything, it wouldn't matter either way if Lyra at heart believed you or if anyone believed you?
Ama: on 07/26/2007
Since almost no one here has ever met you, the only thing they can possibly base your intelligence on is that essay-type thing of yours. Anybody can make up things to make themselves look intelligent. I'm not saying you're making it up, but there's no reason for a person to believe you if it appears that you can't even spell properly.
Ama: on 07/31/2007
I'm not making you do anything. I'm only suggesting things. It looks as if you do have at least some time to waste if you wrote all that stuff about yourself.
If you don't care whether people believe you, why would you say "they shood believe me".
Ama: on 08/03/2007
I'm just saying that there really isn't anything more indicative that a person can't spell than their spelling errors. It's simple as that.
So if someone sees that you at least appear to be unable to spell, there's less reason to believe that you're very good in English at all.
belaqua-silvertongue: on 09/01/2007
