And that looks wayyy too modern. I do not think Mrs. Coulter would wear something that makes her look like a modern movie star. Especially not when she's at Jordan. Don't the costume people know that Lyra's world is old-fashioned and super conservative and all?

that's because daemons are to be a cgi efffect - they don't do that stuff as they go along, it's added in post production. all we'll get to see for now is green-screen markers.

Well, Mrs. Coulter is part of the Church, and the HDM Church is old-fashioned and conservative. And I don't think she'd deliberately annoy the important Jordan administrators just for the heck of it. She seems like someone who would think twice before making unnecessary trouble with powerful people. Besides, I don't think they'd even let someone dressed like that attend their important dinners and such. It's hard to tell exactly but it looks like she's wearing pants, and remember how surprised and disbelieving Lyra was Will said she should wear pants. Judging from that she probably hardly ever (or never) saw or heard of a woman wearing pants before. If Mrs. Coulter had worn pants or even something this movie star-like at Jordan, and Lyra had seen, it would have said so in the book because Lyra would have been so shocked. The book did not say Mrs. Coulter wore pants or dressed shockingly. Therefore, I do not think that just because Mrs. Coulter is a strong, independent and powerful person, she would wear something like this. Especially not at Jordan, which is, once again, where she must be in this picture, because the picture is called "Mrs. Coulter at Jordan." For all those who did not see it the first time, that is Mrs. Coulter at Jordan. Don't mean to offend anyone, but I'm trying to help people see what is right in front of their eyes.

Hear, hear! although i would like to add: regardless if she's wearing a one-piece gown or a two-piece with trousers. I would have prefered coulter in a more european, suave/seductive style. I've imagined she would wear some beautiful and rich yet understated clothes that would heighten her natural beauty.

Don't you think that nicole kidman would look a bit too pale with very dark hair? which could perhaps make her look less superiorly beautiful, as she was supposed to be. which is why i think she is wrong for the role...but pullman said he wanted her to play coulter so i don't know

Nicole Kidman was chosen for the role because she is clearly the best actress to play her, it doesn't matter if she doesn't look like her (In my opinion she does look like her figure wise and face wise just not the colour of her hair)

I once though nicole would be perfect for the role while i was reading HDM.

I'm not absolutely thrilled with this picture... but Nicole Kidman has never been my first choice as Mrs Coulter. I'm sure she'll do great, though. It's just a bit dissapointing to me bceause I had a very firm picture of her in my mind while I read the books. Ah well, New Line will probably make it turn out fantastically anyway :)

While reading the books i always imagined Mrs. Coulter as Catherine Zeta Jones - which would make sense about the dark hair thing. Still, I'm sure Nicole will be awesome.

The best way to avoid that happening Pan_Kirjava_Isabelle, is to just enjoy the book as the book, and the film as the film. Remember it is an adaptation so some things will be different. But if you just hold in your mind what you remember the characters like, then the book won't spoil it !!

Wow! What an ace shot of Mrs Coulter! They have'nt put her Deamon in yet, they're only promo stills, don't worry there will be deamons they're an important part in the story. :)

I just happen to think that dress is horribly ugly. I don't even find it very sexy. It doesn't even flatter Kidmans shape. It's not sophisticated or alluring. Just guady. And one thing Coulter wasn't, was gaudy. or blonde.

And the blonde thing is important, despite what some people claim. Would you like it if they changed her name or her daemon? Those are similar indicators of personality (and before someone jumps me and says that hair color is biological and uncontrolable or something- that's in real life, in fiction someone did have control, and gave her dark hair). Authors give characters certain features for specific reasons, so when I heard Kidman was playing Coulter I assumed she was going to dye her hair. If she's too pale to carry it, than she isn't the right actor for the character-besides ever heard or makeup, anyone? (BTW, I like Kidman enough, she was never how I pictured Coulter, but she is a talented actor, so I accept it) Still, blonde hair has different connotations than darker hair, that's just a fact.

i kinda agree with you reason. But nicole i think is just too PERFECT for the role of Coulter to loose. And i think they coulda given her brown hair. I mean she looked fabulous in Moulin Rouge! with brown hair. But the director probably wanted a different feel to the movie and to make her stand out in Jordan in front of all the other men. To people who are gonna watch the film without reading the book the director wanted her to stand out because she is such an important and sophistacted character. In the photograph... well she looks alright... but that dress just does not do anything to contribute to her body shape.

I love the dress. It's exactly something I imagined Coulter to wear. Very slinky and shiny and wealthy looking. She doesn't look off-the-red-carpet at all; it's actually a traditional dress. The costume designer did a very good job. Coulter was very glamourous.
I recall reading that she had midnight black hair, but now that I think of it, Nicole K. probably wouldn't look good with hair that dark and I do think she is a perfect choice. So, they didn't dye her hair... Kinda annoys me, but whatever.

They changed alot of things but that doesnt mean the movie will stink. We havent seen it yet, all we have to go by is the teaser footage which by the ways looks brilliant!

I'm not gonna let it get me down too much coz I think Kidman looks fantastic anyway and she will act it superbly, but I soooo imagined her playing the part with long waving black hair and full red lips, a sort of evil snow white look coz her skin is so fair and flawless. And I imagined her in silky loose and exotic looking fabrics in delicate shades of purple, blue and pink. I'm gonna have to try and draw it sometime to capture it but oooh in my mind she would look like Coulter straight from the pages. Of course with Nicole Kidman though she is beauty no matter what her hair colour/style or wardrobe is.
