Digital Spy reports that Dakota Blue Richards is unsure of the fate of sequels’ production. ‘The 13-year-old, who played the lead role of Lyra Belacqua, told Teletext: “I think they are going to see how it does when it opens in Japan.”‘ While The Golden Compass did not perform well in the North American box office, it was a hit in European theatres and other overseas markets such as South Korea. I hope it does well in Japan then. Or perhaps not, if we want a director’s cut with the original ending and all.. oh I don’t know anymore. Having to wait in uncertainty is so frustrating.

  2. advo says:

I would prefer they filmed the entire trilogy instead of just TGC with the original ending, so I hope it does really well in Japan – but I’m certainly worried and frustrated that they don’t make a decision – or maybe they have made it now? Maybe the silence is the answer?

  3. Lucy says:

I want to watch the whole trilogy!!!! it would be unfair if they dont film the rest of them

  4. Nadeen says:

I had wondered if they were not waiting for the box office returns out of Japan. I would love to see the sequals so I hope it does well.

  5. RedRidingHood says:

I agree. While the first wasn’t spectacular, I feel the story of the next two books alone will fare better on screen. The other two films should be made. So, it didn’t go over well in the states? Big deal! Money is money, I always think, no matter where it comes from. same with success. I never have understood why there is such “importance” placed on performance in the U.S. alone.

I’m on the other side. I don’t think anyone can pass the emotion and power of Pullman’s books. What New Line did to TGC
was pure butchery of literature, so I’m not mad about the other two. Especially TAS which if filmed will be a total massacre , not just a butchery of literature.

  7. cantado says:

Hopefully the film does well in Japan! It would be a pity for us as fans if New Line weren’t to produce sequels.

  8. Mockingbird says:

If they decide not to do sequels, they won’t announce it.

You can wait until the Japan release, but really, if after that you hear no word, you can be 100% sure there will be no sequels.

  9. Foulksy says:

I don’t think its going to do that well there…….

    BUT HOPE IT DOES!!!

  10. Tim says:

    I NEED to be will

I do really hope they do The Subtle Knife movie, but I hope The Golden Compass does well in Japan, I am determined to do the role of Will Parry.

  12. Grumman says:

Poor Dakota! I hope some other producer will cast her for some other role.

  13. Hoshino Ai says:

I do hope that The Subtle Knife as well as The Amber Spyglass will be made into a movie. I read the books, and it moved me like no other novel did, and I was very impressed with the movie. I’m not sure why people are saying it didn’t do well in America…it grossed almost 30 million dollars in the first few days and was number 1 for about a week. At any rate, I loved the movie, and I’m absolutely with the decision to make the sequel. Keep your head up Dakota! ^_~v
