World Wildlife Fund partnership
Posted on by jessia

New Line Cinema has joined the World Wildlife Fund to promote awareness of the impact of global warming on the animals of the world, particularly polar bears. ‘”Connecting WWF’s real work to combat global climate change to the fantasy world portrayed in ‘The Golden Compass’ is a natural fit,” said John Donoghue, senior vice president of World Wildlife Fund. “We hope the excitement generated by ‘The Golden Compass’ will draw attention to real issues impacting our planet and encourage people around the world to take action to protect and conserve nature.”‘ Fans will have the opportunity to adopt an animal whose form is represented by a daemon in the film here. See the special WWF Golden Compass public service announcement (narrated by Dakota Blue Richards) here or the World Wildlife Fund for more details.

This is probably the best news I have heard in a long time. I am absolutely thrilled about this!

I am an environmental studies major, and have seen the frustration first hand of trying to get awareness. I was promoting a cell-phone recycling campaigne for gorilla and chimp conservation, and most people don’t even realize these species are critically endangered ( there are only 15 more years left of them.)
There are a lot of misconceptions about the fate of our world now, especially with global warming where there is an “us” (humans) or “them” (animals)mentality, when in truth it is entirely interconnected. (take reef systems, for example)

It is obvious how much influence that the film industry can have on opinions and ideas, but often they are used in the wrong direction. These people have the power to inspire, and it is comforting knowing that they are using their voice to express this concern.
I am just proud that they are using something so public as a tool for conservation, and I think that is is something that should be done more often. The video on the main site the WWF is excellent, with a great narration by Dakota, and the adopt-an-animal program is fantastic (my zoo has it).

The Subtle Knife deals with global warming completely, as the polar bears are forced to migrate, so I believe this medium is ideal. I have always been an animal lover, but HDM actually inspired interest for me in bears which I never really had before. I think that people will gain a new appreciation for a place that so many few have seen.
With issues of oil mining in Alaska and the channel they are proposing to make up north, I think it is crucial that people start taking interest and asking questions. The tundra is a delicate, important ecosystem, and is at a huge risk right now.
If this movie inspires people to take interest, then it is the first step to action.
A huge kudos to the people of The Golden Compass for taking this initiative.
