Press reviews pour in
Posted on by jessia

After three days of press screenings and roundtables, reviews by members of the press have begun to appear online and in print. Like our own, most praise writing, set pieces, and performances especially. The Sun describe Dakota Blue Richard’s debut portraying Lyra as “enchanting,” predicting that sequels are sure to follow. The film itself is called “a well-written, beautifully delivered adventure.” The Guardian‘s Peter Bradshaw gives The Golden Compass four stars, praising Kidman’s take on the villainous Mrs. Coulter (who could out-evil Darth Vader any day and “may come to dominate our children’s nightmares the way Robert Helpmann’s Child Catcher in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang once did ours”). Fox News‘ Roger Friedman describes the film as a success with Oscar worthy visual effects and production design: “a large-scale thoughtful fantasy, something to get lost in during (the) holiday film season.” Performances are “spot on” and Kidman and Craig’s on screen chemistry is redemptive the turnout of The Invasion. Meanwhile, James Christopher of the Times gives the film only two stars. While once again praising performances and special effects, he laments on the film’s pacing and claims, “the magic is missing.”

There will certainly be more reviews in the next few weeks. Keep and eye on BridgetotheStars for more reviews as the wider release approaches.

School board reviews library stock
Posted on by jessia

Last week the CBC reported that the Halton Catholic District School Board in Ontario, Canada had placed The Golden Compass under review to decide whether it would remain on elementary school library shelves, in light of a complaint from a member of the community. The Globe & Mail reports that the book has since been pulled from shelves until the review is complete, and that other local school boards have considered a review of the book. Superintendent Rick MacDonald would not disclose the nature of the complaint but noted it is a first in several years. “… the committee is simply responding to a request for a review of the material.” The review should be complete within the first week of the New Line adaptation’s release.

“What Catholics attacking ‘The Golden Compass’ are really afraid of”
Posted on by jessia

Donna Freitas, author of the new guide book Killing the Imposter God: Philip Pullman’s Spiritual Imagination in His Dark Materials, has written an article in the Boston Globe on the Catholic League and other evangelical group’s campaign against The Golden Compass. In its defense, she says, “to reduce Pullman to these few juicy sound bites is to ignore the whole of a complex, exuberantly curious intellectual who has infused his writing with a complex, crisply rendered theology.” Freitas sees the true, divine God in Dust, which permeates the story. Read more.

Another article by Freitas appears in Newsweek, once again defending the “reluctant theologian.” “Its telos or “end purpose,” highlights a vision of the Christian God and God’s relationship to this world – one that has long lingered in the rhetoric of Christian feminist and liberation theologians… their work has languished in the dark corners of academe and on the wrong side of Christian orthodoxy.” Read more.
