We've much more on Playbox Theatre's adaptation of His Dark Materials. Olivia Meguer, the actress playing Lyra, has kindly conducted an interview with us, covering what she thinks of the books and how she'll be getting into Lyra's head. In the lead up to the staging of the play, we'll be featuring regular updates from the cast and the crew on rehearsals as the premiere draws nearer. This week, Co-Director Stewart McGill on the creation process and how the script is being tweaked as the cast perform. Read it all.

Artists Seek Blasphemy Repeal

Following on from last week's defeat of a government bill to outlaw “abusive and insulting” criticism of religion, Philip Pullman and Nicholas Hytner (director of HDM at the National Theatre) are leading renewed calls for the repeal of the existing blasphemy laws in Britain – which apply solely to the Church of England. “Religion,” said Pullman, “like every other form of human thought, [has to] take its chance in free, open debate.” Read more.

Tucker Briefly on HDM Again

The His Dark Materials film director, Anand Tucker, spoke some words on the project in an interview with the Telegraph today. On his selection as director he feels he was, “more than a left-field choice. It's a miracle that I'm sitting here;” and with regards to the possible problems of portraying the anti-religious aspects of HDM he says: “the books are not about pointing the finger at the Judaeo-Christian tradition. They're about any belief structures that try to control people and stop them from being true to themselves. That's why they work all over the world.” Read more.

Religious Hate Bill Defeated

Philip Pullman, amongst other leading British writers and comedians, has welcomed the defeat of a proposed bill to govern aspects of religious hatred – which critics say would have curbed free speech in Britain. “The episode also shows that if we want to guard freedom of expression, we can't relax our vigilance for a minute,” said Pullman. Dickens first

Britain's top authors were asked by a study by the Royal Society of Literature to choose 10 core books children should read by the time they leave school. Philip Pullman espoused the value of such literary classics as “Shakespeare, Beatrix Potter, Dickens and even The Bible,” also including many traditional myths, legends and fairy tales. Read more.
