The Telegraph writes that “the long-awaited film adaptation of Philip Pullman's best-selling trilogy of novels, His Dark Materials, has been lured from Prague to be shot at Shepperton studios, in the wake of Gordon Brown's [British Chancellor of the Exchequer] new tax credits for high-budget blockbusters.” Taxes on film productions have recently soared in the UK. Dons and Dragons

Why has the city of Oxford produced some of the world's most famous fantasy writers for children? Radio 4's Michael Rosen is joined by Phillip Pullman, Jonathan Miller and AN Wilson as he explores the nooks and crannies of medieval buildings, rifles through dusty papers and climbs into hidden hide-aways to try to explain it. Callbacks continue, filming to begin by November

For those of you who have been asking about callbacks from the Lyra auditions, the Oxford Mail may be of some help: “New Line Cinema spokesman Alexandra Ruane said: “Callbacks from the various auditions are still taking place, and the actress who will play Lyra will be chosen before filming starts in the Autumn or by November.” Read more.

Pullman's Latest Thoughts on the Movie

Philip Pullman has updated his web site with some brief comments on the status of the movie, including the casting of Lyra and the recent change of director. He again defends his decision to sell the movie rights and opines that “the latest script, from Chris Weitz, is truly excellent; I know, because I've just this morning read it. I think it's a model of how to condense a story of 400 pages into a script of 110 or so. All the important scenes are there and will have their full value. I'm sorry to say goodbye to Anand Tucker, whom I liked, but glad that the film will go forward in such good shape.” Read more.
