Filming for The Golden Compass movie is taking place at the Old Royal Naval College this week. Sir Christopher Wren designed the great baroque buildings, which are set in landscaped grounds on the River Thames in the centre of the Maritime Greenwich World Heritage Site.
We've learnt that the grand Painted Hall was doubling for the Jordan College Dining Room, and that the majority of this weeks filming was for the scene in which the Master asks Lyra if she really wants to go with Mrs Coulter. Two hundred students in full regalia, several servants and fellows made up the scene, together with Mrs Coulter, Lyra, the Master and various birds and beasties, with the golden monkey also in attendence.
You can now view some photographs of the filming taking place – much thanks to Jonathan for sending those in. Thanks also to the other tipsters.
BridgeToTheStars.net is launching the first HDM audio-show – the SrafCast. It's a fortnightly opportunity to hear excitable Sraffies talk about all the latest His Dark Materials news and discuss wider themes from the books. Ian has been working for while now on the project and it's the result of his – and the participants – hard work. You can subscribe to the podcast through iTunes, or download it directly. You can send your thoughts about it to podcast@bridgetothestars.net
Filming for The Golden Compass movie is taking place around Oxford this week. The Randolph Hotel and the Pitt Rivers museum are tipped as locations; Carl says that film crews have been setting up in Exeter College – Philip Pullman's old haunt and the inspiration for Jordan – whilst Dgel has a more in-depth sighting: “extras / actors in costume – people in academic gowns, soldiers in dark grey military uniforms – is this the movie on location?”
Photos: We've divided photos into two galleries for now. There's one for actors in costume – which at this moment consists of Nicole Kidman, who was snapped arriving blonde haired and clad in a fur-edged coat. The other is of photographs of the film crews at work in Oxford. Kim has scored us some great close-up photos of filming – include a shot of stuffed daemons – whilst another Sraffie took some more general photos of the filming.

We'd love for more and better photographs of the production – so if anyone lives in Oxford or nearby, do as Dgel did and take your dog for a walk! We'll offer a free HDM book to anyone who can get some good snaps for us. Contact address.
A sinister cocktail of junk food, marketing, over-competitive schooling and electronic entertainment is poisoning childhood, a powerful lobby of academics and children's experts says today. In a letter to The Daily Telegraph, 110 teachers, psychologists, children's authors and other experts call on the Government to act to prevent the death of childhood. They write: “We are deeply concerned at the escalating incidence of childhood depression and children's behavioural and developmental conditions.” The group, which includes Philip Pullman, blames a failure by politicians and public alike to understand how children develop. It seems that the link between human and dæmon is so strong that it has been used in simile in last Thursday’s episode of “The Archers†on BBC Radio 4. In conversation, we hear the words; “Tom being without his mobile, it’s like being separated from his dæmon.†There ensues a short discussion about the books.
