Official website for The Golden Compass launches

New Line announced today that the official website for His Dark Materials: The Golden Compass is now online at www.goldencompassmovie.com. The site features never-before-seen images from the set, concept art, an alethiometer feature (certain symbol combinations will unlock extra concept art–see the solution), and more information about the upcoming film. Update: Photos of Eva Green as Serafina Pekkala–without blonde hair–have been added to the site. (Thanks to J for the tip)

A few things we've learnt about the film from the site:

Armored bears to be called 'ice bears'; although still panserbjorne.
Daemon to be pronounced 'day-mon' instead of 'dee-mon'.
Concept art gives Lyra's world a curious mix of high- and old-technology.
Magisterium increasingly looking like plain political fascists.
Fra Pavel, instead of the Master, apparently to poison Lord Asriel.
Serafina not blonde after all!

The first picture of Daniel Craig as Lord Asriel has been posted on IMDb. It hasn't yet been verified by New Line, but does appear to be genuine. Book Contest:

Claire Squires – one of the first writers to come out with a book about His Dark Materials – releases her new book on the trilogy this week (US / UK). Developing on her previous publication, it still focuses on His Dark Materials, but includes a lengthy biographical chapter, analysis of Pullman's other books and a look at the various adaptations of the trilogy. We'll have a review of the book up soon; in the meantime, you can read a review of her first book here.

Claire and her publisher have kindly offered up a book for a contest here. Inspired by a discussion back at Srafcon, Claire wants to see what food would you offer to cook for a HDM character and why? Answers in by email please. We'll pick the best entry in the next couple of weeks and hopefully have the book to someone for Christmas.

Blonde Serafina & Filming Tidbits

Eva Green begun shooting her scenes as the witch Serafina Pekkala today in London. She will be reportedly be playing Serafina as a blonde. Thanks to the lovely Mariana of EvaGreenWeb. It should also be noted that Nicole Kidman finished her scenes at the end of November. Filming as a whole is scheduled to end late January.

Pullman's Great Pleasure

Philip Pullman hosted BBC Radio 4's With Great Pleasure programme yesterday. The His Dark Materials author entertained an audience at the Pegasus Theatre in Oxford, with actors reading a selection of his favourite poems and excerpts. You can listen again to the programme on the BBC's website for the next six days.
