Golden Compass Visit Footage!
Posted on by

BridgeToTheStars.net visited The Golden Compass set back in January and now we’ve got hold of some footage from the event to share with you all. There’s four clips in all. The first features the movie’s producer, Deborah Forte, speaking about her passion for the book and conviction that it will make a cracking film. The second is some rolling footage of what was on display on the day: concept art of Iorek Byrnison, Ragnar Sturlusson and the North; costumes of people in Lyra’s world, finishing with a look at Serafina Pekkala’s dark purple dress. The third clip features one of the film’s designer talking through some storyboard visualisation, with a preview of some of the computer graphics work – all unfinished at this stage. The fourth and last video shows Eva Green’s stunt-double whizzing around on an elaborate winch produced to capture film for the flight scenes. The first video is embedded below so you can start viewing right away. Enjoy!

Lyra goes to Hollywood

Philip Pullman has written a piece in the Sunday Times, hosts of this year’s Oxford Literary Festival beginning 20 March, “revealing his feelings at the prospect of seeing His Dark Materials on screen.” In his first in-depth reflections on film progress outside his less-than-monthly newsletter, he discusses the possibilities of storytelling in film (“As a matter of fact, from a storytelling point of view, the novel and the film aren’t so different”), Tom Stoppard’s original screenplay, and his hopes for the cast and production. Thanks to WEN for the tip. Read more.

The Golden Compass Poster
Posted on by Will

The ShoWest motion picture industry convention begins today and a teaser poster for The Golden Compass movie has been snapped by IESB.net. The poster features a glowingly-lit alethiometer, with the tagline (word-for-word from the book) of “It is the alethiometer. It tells the truth. As for how to read it, you’ll have to learn by yourself.” The poster also reaffirms the movie’s release date: December 7th, 2007. That’s a little under nine months today. Thanks to Dustin for the tip. View the poster.

The critical buzz has already begun. Susan Wloszczyna of USA Today summarises the development of buzz for the 79th Academy Awards’ nominations and makes some predictions for next year’s awards. “The fun bunch: Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig star in the girl-centric fantasy His Dark Materials: The Golden Compass.” Thanks to randomthotz for the tip. Read more.

p.s. Apologies to those who had commentated on this post; we’ve moved to some new software and unfortunately this had to be the post to take the fall.

New Line to launch The Golden Compass at Cannes
Posted on by Will

New Line will be making a huge push to promote The Golden Compass at this year’s Cannes Film Festival in May. Following a similar route to Lord of the Rings, footage of the movie will be shown to selected journalists and distributors, with much of the film’s cast present – Daniel Craig and Nicole Kidman are planned to attend. The event will mark New Line’s 40th anniversary as a studio, so should be a big one.
