First Look: The Golden Compass footage
Posted on by jessia

A promotional video for The Golden Compass has hit the web today. Something of a proto-trailer, the video is a mixture of completed live-action footage and as-yet unfinished effects work. It features all of the major stars from the upcoming film and reveals numerous scenes for the first time. It’s the most complete footage yet available by far, but it should be stressed that this is not the finished article. You can view it below. We’ll have stills from the video up soon, but in the meantime you can view some here Thanks to brendonconnelly and Ilaria for the tip.

Report: Pullman at Oxford Literary Festival
Posted on by Will

A chap named Steven has written on his blog about the Philip Pullman and New Line discussion at the Oxford Literary Festival. Whilst there were no scenes from the movie shown, it seems some animation testing of Pantalaimon as a ferret was previewed by Mike Fink, the film’s animation designer. Steven reports that “Philip’s favourite scenes in the movie are when Lyra first meets Iorek Byrnison and when Lee Scoresby and Serafina Pekkala are flying in Lee’s hot air balloon and Lyra is lying asleep. […] How will they represent Dust? Fink was very elusive about that, so I’m not really sure what the answer is.” Read more. You can also read a comprehensive write up in saestina’s blog and you can read about Claire’s thoughts in the comments section of this article. The Oxford Mail has also reported on the event: “Mr Pullman told the audience in Oxford Town Hall on Saturday: “I did not expect the book would be so successful and that it would be made into a film.”” Read more.

Pullman’s Solar Panels
Posted on by Will

Philip Pullman has an opinionated piece in the Guardian today. Focusing again on the environment, he bemoans the bureaucracy that keeps him from installing solar panels on his home. “They said immediately that we could forget it because this is a grade II-listed building. […] It doesn’t even occur to it that there are more urgent and recent considerations that should override them.” Pullman goes on to say, “I feel I have an individual responsibility, but at the same time putting in low-energy light bulbs or flying as little as possible – as I do now – will make not one atom of difference. This problem can really only be dealt with by the government, and I have absolutely no faith that the craven liars who are in power now will do anything at all.” Read more.

French Promotional Booklet Images (+ scan)
Posted on by Will

French site Elbakin.net has grabbed some scans of a promotional booklet for The Golden Compass movie. It seems very similar to the English-language promotional pack New Line sent out some months ago, but features a few new shots – for example, two in the lower-right here. It also shows the film’s logo in French for the first time – interestingly, the title contains the French title for the series as a whole, A la Croisee des Mondes; whilst as far as we know, TGC is being promoted without the His Dark Materials tag at the moment. Head over to Ebalkin to view the booklet.

Update: There’s also a scan of Lyra and John Faa to view too.
