French Promotional Booklet Images (+ scan)
Posted on by Will

French site Elbakin.net has grabbed some scans of a promotional booklet for The Golden Compass movie. It seems very similar to the English-language promotional pack New Line sent out some months ago, but features a few new shots – for example, two in the lower-right here. It also shows the film’s logo in French for the first time – interestingly, the title contains the French title for the series as a whole, A la Croisee des Mondes; whilst as far as we know, TGC is being promoted without the His Dark Materials tag at the moment. Head over to Ebalkin to view the booklet.

Update: There’s also a scan of Lyra and John Faa to view too.

  2. drama queen says:

kl, there is a new pic of lyra talkin to a man……… i could understand a little of the french but not much……….

  3. Jammer says:

That one of Lyra talking to a man kinda looks like something outta star wars…

  4. Kizzy says:

English poster says: 7th December 2007
French promotional booklet says: 5th December 2007
Surely they won’t release the film in France first?
Not that waiting a few days longer will make much difference…

  5. Thomas says:

When there is a international release, movies are always release in france the wednesday. So, we will see the movie before you ^^

  6. drama queen says:

they will need to realese the film first in france……. it is the premier then because england and france are the two main countries for the film because of culture thingy magigy and france then england last because it is the best………

  7. Silverfist says:

I like some of these. Especially the one with Lyra and the Bolvagar Guard or whoever he is. I speak French, and on the poster thingy, they are calling this movie
At the Crossing of the Worlds:
    The Compass of Gold
That does not sound right. The best title is Northern Lights. They should have called the movie that.
I SOOOOOOO WANT TO GO TO THE PREMIRE!!!!!!!!! THAT WOULD BE SOOOOOOO AWESOME!!!!

  8. jessia says:

interesting that they’re translating ‘the golden compass’ to ‘la boussole d’or’ for the title rather than using the french title ‘les royaumes du nord’ (kingdoms of the north).

  9. aklebury says:

I don’t think it’s actually “the compass of gold” – you’re not supossed to translate it quite as rigidly as that – it is just effectively “the golden compass”…

i do like the production-art of the gyptians walking towards the mountains – very nice

  10. drama queen says:

it is the compass gold as like you say un pantalon bleu in stead of blue un pantalon because thats just how the french do things……….

  11. crazy_stunt_girl says:

I’m a little disappointed in the picture of the gyptians going north… I was really looking forward to the dog sleds and it being a very “northen winter” landscape. I don’t know how they’re going to put in the Aurora when it looks like early summer up there. Maybe in Lyra’s world the Northern Lights are seen all year round. Oh well, the scenary is still gorgeous and I still can’t wait for this film!!!

  12. Jules says:

Crazy_stunt_girl, just so you know, the northern lights can be seen all year round in our world. I’ve seen them on my birthday, which is in August, and I don’t live in the north.

  13. Kain says:

    This image:

Is that of the Gyptians on their arctic voyage? It seems very summery over there, just like you said, crazy_stunt_girl. Even though it’s only concept art, I do hope it won’t look like this in the film. The setting is supposed to be extremely blizzard-cold as was described in the book.

  14. Kain says:

Oh yeah, and that image of the travelling Gyptians or whatever, looks MORE like the scenes of New Zealand’s mountains from LORD OF THE EFFIN’ RINGS! Sooooo unoriginal!!! =(
    http://www.owenriverlodge.co.nz/images/lotr.jpg
    Now COMPARE that!!!

  15. Anita says:

The mountains don’t look like NZ’s mountains to me. They are bleaker and more surreal looking than the Southern Alps. The tops of NZ’s mountains are more jagged. And I wish it looked colder too. But GO NZ!! That’s where I’m from!

  16. silvertongue says:

grass ?????????????????????? GRASS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!?????????? tf its supposed 2 b SNOW

  17. Ashe says:

They are HEADING north. So chances are they still aren’t at their destination yet. That’s why it could only be partly snow covered.

  18. Jamie Sutherland says:

Yea, remember, they have to head North. They don’t just magically appear there. Therefore, there won’t be snow when they first set off, you plonkers.

  19. crazy_stunt_girl says:

Jules, where in the North were you? I grew up in the Yukon Territory in Canada which is infamous for Aurora Borealis and the summer days there it’s too light to see anything. Farther north you go the longer the daylight hours in the summer. And this is supposed to happen in the winter; Pullman mentions there being 24 hours or close to of darkness which is characteristic of winter weather. So maybe I read it wrong, but the way Pullman was describing the trip to Bolvangar it happened in winter since it was so close to winters we had in the Yukon. But this is another world, right? So maybe things are different there. You can see Northern Lights in August up to March (at least in Alaska and the Territories), but the weather isn’t consistant with Pullman’s descriptions; and they’re not as strong as they are in later winter months. As well, I had always imagined it being winter… they start out on their journey from Trollesund on DOG SLED which requires SNOW, which isn’t what it looks like here. Anyway, it’s not a really big deal to the outcome of the story, it’s just a personal disappointment to me being from the northern climate and knowing exactly what Pullman was describing when he wrote it.

  20. Amanda says:

Wait, the alethiometer (sp?) on the back cover has only 18 symbols. It’s supposed to have 36. But, the rest looks great.

  21. Olparin says:

Does anyone know why in the picture with Nicole Kidman, her daemon’s name says ‘singe doré’ instead of ‘singe d’or’? I am alright with french, but I had to look up doré and I found it means ‘gilded’. Any thoughts?

  22. Olparin says:

In case that didn’t show up on anyone’s computer (for some reason mine hates accents) it is an e with an accent aigu

  23. Witch-girl says:

    How impressive!

  24. Shadowraven says:

“doré” means “golden” as “or” means “gold”

  25. Olparin says:

Thanks Shadowraven. That makes a lot more sense.

  26. Annabel says:

Dakota looks so lyraish in the John Faa pic ^__^
