The Golden Compass Pre-Production Video
August 16, 2007
Made before production on The Golden Compass movie had begun, this video from New Line runs through the plot of the first His Dark Materials book to introduce the project to anyone unfamiliar with the novel. After a brief introduction to Philip Pullman and the successes the books have had, the twenty-seven minute video proceeds to detail the plot of the film through the use of actors, narration and storyboarding. You can view the video in three parts over at our YouTube channel; or simply watch the first of the three videos embedded below, with the remaining two below the fold. Enjoy.
Update: New Line have asked us to take down this footage as it was produced by Anand Tucker – the previous director for the film – and is “not an appropriate representation of the film being produced.” Naturally we’re disappointed: the video has been receiving positive comments, and viewers will not be so naive as to assume the film will be exactly like this footage. We’ll comply with the request however, and no longer link to the video. New Line have also been targeting the video on sites such as YouTube, so it may not be possible to find the footage elsewhere on the web at all.

Nicole Kidman Explores Sci-Fi
August 15, 2007
MTV have an article on Nicole Kidman’s upcoming film projects, of which The Golden Compass is one. Kidman will be appearing with Daniel Craig, her TGC co-star, in The Invasion (due out this year) and the actress sees some parallels between the two movies. “There are these fascinating primal emotions involved when you’ve got a mother protecting her child,” she says, “though in ‘Golden Compass,’ I’m batting for the other team.” With both films being Kidman’s first entry sci-fi / fantasy, she remarks that “I’m actually a fan of all genre films, be it thrillers, romantic comedy or science fiction. I just really like it when they can nail the genre, when I can read the script and say, ‘OK, this is fascinating.’ ” Read more.

The Travelling Compass
August 14, 2007
The Manilla Bulletin Online writes of the efforts New Line are going to to promote The Golden Compass, with the company’s Executive Vice President for International Sales (Nestor Nieves) arriving in Manila this week to give a “ten minute primer” on the film. Nieves has already visited South Korea and Hong Kong with the same agenda, and tells the Bulletin, “We did this kind of marketing and promotion for ‘Lord of the Rings,’ touring all over the world and sharing snippets of the movie to create excitement and awareness for the epic movie and it worked very well. That’s why we’re doing this again for The Golden Compass. Somehow, coming here to personally share this excitement for a very important movie in every region establishes a connection to our global audience.”
Nieves also went on to mention that New Line Cinema has already spent 5 million in production for The Golden Compass: “Just for special effects alone, we have spent millions already. We have two companies working for us for the special effects of this film, one in Los Angeles, California and one in London.” Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Bangkok and Taiwan are still on Nieves’ Asian promotion itinerary. Chris Weitz to draft Subtle Knife (see update)
August 13, 2007
An article at the Iranian website Payvand says that the Iranian-born screenwriter, Hossein Amini, will no longer be penning the script for the adaptation of The Subtle Knife. Amini was commissioned to write a draft script back in January, but Payvand reports that “apparently Amini set off working on another movie, Killshot, produced by Quentine Tarantino and the task was given to another talented screenwriter: Chris Weitz.” We’ll see if we can confirm this.
Update: According to New Line’s production executive, Hossein Amini is still the only writer for The Subtle Knife after all.
