Movie reaches 300 million dollars
Posted on by Ian

With the DVD and Blu Ray releases of The Golden Compass movie due on April 28th, the theatrical release has finally reached US$ 300 million worldwide (not including the USA which is generally referred to as the domestic market), almost some five months after it was first released. Following a continued strong showing in Japan (where the movie was released in March) the 300 million mark was reached over the weekend. The film has now taken almost $33 million in Japan and the total figure for outside the USA stands at $300,695,060 – making The Golden Compass the first ever movie to make over $300 million outside of the USA while making less than $100 million domestically. The latest figures from boxofficemojo place The Golden Compass as the 109th best grossing film ever – hardly the bombing loss maker which it has been portrayed as by many in the media. The overall movie gross total now stands at $370,802,788 – if New Line Cinema had not presold foreign rights to the movie they would surely have broken even by now. You can examine the full figures here.

I have no pity for New Line. They destroyed our movie, and I’m only glad to see their situation now.

  2. daemon_light says:

I hope that a director’s cut will make people satisfied with what they made…

A possible SK and AS is looking more likely then it has been. *crosses fingers*

  3. Spider-Pig says:

I’m sick of people who want NewLine to colapse because they did’nt like the first movie! It’s not that bad! Much better than any Harry Potter movie! And they made 5!!!!

I believe they would do a better job with the sequels!
It would be heresy (lol) not to make them after this!

  4. Matthew says:

Break even? Wouldn’t they be looking at 170m or so even before the home releases? I know the movie cost a pile, but it surely didn’t cost much more than 200m, advertising included.

  5. Ian says:

Dunno, we can’t be sure how many figures they have hidden away and so on. But yeah, a guestimate at what it cost is probably around the 200 mark, maybe a little over.

  6. Fin says:

Is it possible that one of the causes of the movie’s failure to perform as well domestically could be due to the writers’ guild strike? The media (read: FOX news) was creating a very /certain/ image of the books that couldn’t be dispelled by actors appearing on Oprah/Leno/Rachel Ray because those shows were on hiatus. Maybe?

  7. Michael says:

It’s hard for me to care about New Line or this terrible movie. I’m not hoping for a sequel, I’m hoping for a remake!

  8. Grissha says:

And I, hoping for a director’s cut, which I believe that would be wonderful as the theatrical cut should have been :]

I don’t find the movie awful, it’s just insufficient, because of the short lenght. I’ve seen no problem with the footage I’ve watched, it just lacks… well, more footage, self-development.
Except for this, it’s pretty good. Hope they realize this and grab the chance of fixing the movie- and maybe the trilogy.

  9. Grumman says:

    “Michael says:

    Maybe in a decade time.

  10. Lincoln says:

NOW GIVE US THE SUBTLE ****ING KNIFE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  11. Gobbler says:

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE!!Warner Brother lets get the sequal made as they will be fantastic, but you must let Chris Weitz Direct them as he wants. The film has already got two Oscars, and has been named as the only film to make $300 million outside the States. It also made it big in Chine and Japan. What more evidence do they want!!!

  12. lala says:

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE DONT MAKE THE NEXT MOVIES!!!!

  13. Foulksy says:

    Actually one oscar….

    Still one is good enough!!!!

PLZ!!! Where are the cast and crew anyway??? Everyone is very quiet!! What happened to da daniel craig thing saying it is confirmed???

  14. The Legend says:

“PLZ!!! Where are the cast and crew anyway??? Everyone is very quiet!! What happened to da daniel craig thing saying it is confirmed???”

    That was a April Fool.

  15. Nieko says:

I absolutly loved the film tbh, yeah they may have cuit it a bit short, but think how gd the 2nd one would be if they made it!! They had a $180m doller budget, and in TOTAL with USA they have made $370m…. no reason for them not to do it!!

PLEASE New line and Chris weitz make the films!!

Foulksy.. daniel craig has just released a new film and is making the new james bond.. and nicole kidman is currently pregnant

  16. Anita says:

Hopefully ?Warner Bros?? will make it seeing it did SO well (not for New Line though)

Bt please…. a different director who can target it at the right audience! I really, really want to the TSK on the big screen!

People will watch a 2nd film…If it made $300 mil there is bound to be an audience from it and a film company who doesn’t do silly things with foreign rights could make a fortune!

  17. daviddatsme says:

    Wow,thats great!

  18. Sherrilina says:

Please make another movie–BUT DON’T PRE-SELL THE DAMN FOREIGN RIGHTS!!!! Let this be a lesson to you…
