His Dark Materials MUCK now online
Posted on by Will

Daemon MUCK, a text-based His Dark Materials role-playing game is now online. The game is set in Lyra’s world a couple of generations before the events of The Golden Compass. You can create your own character and, with your daemon, you can roam around the streets of London.

From the creator of Daemon MUCK:

“We’ve opted to have the MUCK take place in London rather than Oxford to prevent any potential canon conflicts (all original characters, no book characters). But aside from the change in setting, we’ve kept most of the series’ basis intact: daemons follow you around, witches can be applied for, and the Magisterium and Academic worlds are constantly after each other. Your character can interact with all sorts of other characters, and while there’s no “goal” per se, you are in charge of determining how your character and dæmon develop, what stories they’re a part of, what impact they have on the world.”

Well, first you should download a MUCK client (the wiki has links). That’s basically like a chat program that lets you run the game. You can use that client to log in to the MUCK (Multi-User Chat Kingdom) or any other Multi-User game. To access Daemon MUCK, you should enter in the address, spartanrealms.com port 5000.

(According to the wiki, I haven’t done this personally), a welcome screen will appear, and you can log in with your character name and password. If it’s your first time, you won’t have a character or password yet, so connect as a guest with password “guest” by typing in “con guest guest”. (Don’t actually type the quotation marks)

You can ask newbie help questions by typing in “new hello blah blah blah” (not actually blah blah blah, but whatever you want to say), and access announcements by typing “news”.

Typing “@request” will get you an application form to create a new character for the game. Once you have a character you should be able to play for real.

    I hope that’s helpful.

If it helps, think about it like this:

A MUCK client lets you access Multi-User Chat Kingdoms the same way that a browser lets you access websites once you’ve typed in the URL. With a MUCK client, type in the address of the MU* you want to go to, and it’ll take you there. The client in itself isn’t a chat, in the same way that Explorer or Firefox aren’t in themselves actual websites.

You don’t have to download a client, you can also use this URL telnet://spartanrealms.com:5000

OOoh. I hope this one lasts for a while.

I have it, you’ll love it if you like books with amazing details and if you like typing in things that are sometimes hard to remember.
