Yahoo! movies have just posted the full trailer, which premiered this evening at the Rockefeller Centre. The trailer includes confirmation of Christopher Lee as a member of the magisterium, new clips of the armoured bears (with Ian McKellen voicing Iorek, as the teaser suggested), the battle outside of Bolvangar, and Svalbard. I thought that Ia McKellen was playing the voice of Iofur, not Iorek. In the trailor, the voice of McKellen runs with the image of Iofur and Lyra.. maybe I’m wrong.

    Looks wicked, though!

  2. Ian Landry says:

Sorry I meant I really like Stelmaria’s voice.

Sorry, I meant that I really love Nicole Kidman as an actor. I think she will BOMB this movie. I also like stelmaria’s voice.

It’s disappointing that they are calling it ‘The Golden Compass’ rather than the alethiometer but I can live with that. The ending looks like it is in there, it has definitely already been filmed, and it looks like the vast majority of post production work has been done as well, so I’m now really crossing my fingers that they realised what a horrible mistake it would be to splice the end of Northern Lights onto the beginning of The Subtle Knife. I still don’t like McKellen as Iorek, but I will reserve judgment until I hear the voice in full context of the film. Overall it looks really good, fingers crossed it will be.

    Just to add:

What is deeply ironic about the link on the first page, about the catholic movement against the film, is that by trying to quash a viewpoint that they don’t agree with they are behaving exactly like the ‘church’ of Pullman’s creation, ergo they are trying to control what people think and question. I am a committed Christian, my father is a vicar, but I have always been to question, examine and more than anything else think. Like anything else you can take from these books what you wish, to me these books are about love and freedom, and those are the greatest gifts that God gave us anyway, Love and the freedom of free will.

they could do with subtle references to the religion in the first film and explode it in the next two, i don’t really care if it isn’t a major theme in tgc however because the story itself honestly stands alone quite capably.

mckellen for iorek instead of the perfect voice they already had = boo. splicing the end of book one into film two = BOO. dumbing down the story just so film audiences, presupposed to be illiterate and therefore idiots = *BOO!*

this trailer, despite being the largest glimpse to date, makes me ill with its gimmicks and monstrous errors. i hope it’s not the best they can do.

I’m not crazy about Nicole Kidman as Mrs. Coulter. And I didn’t like the way Asriel was smiling, he looked too kind. McKellen’s voice for Iorek doesn’t fit. I’m reading the book right now and I’m having trouble with Dakota as Lyra. But it still looks like its going to be better than the Harry Potter adaptations (I can’t stomach D.Ratt)

  9. FrumpyB says:

Aryl. You mention a change to the ending, is this referenced somewhere on the web?
The changing of the voice of Iorek must have happened a while back, it would have been a great deal of work to do. I thought Nonso was too dead-pan, but I think McKellen is too far the other direction, I keep waiting to hear “You shall not pass”!

I like the extended trailer sooooo much better! I watched this one first and was a tad dissapointed, but then I watched the extended one and that got me really excited!! I have to say that I’m very surprised with the quality of the deamons, they look very realistic, the same goes for Iorek. Although I did prefer the previous voice I love everything Ian does so I’m all for the change.

The refwerences to “the golden compass” and the “magisteriun” were definitely done for the trailer. A question, I know they are taking everything to do with the church and changing it to the magisterium but, if the following movies get made what are they going to do with the angels, and the war against heaven, and Will and Lyra freeing the souls? They can’t posibly take that out, can they?

Sorry for the double post, but I encourage you all to visit the link that Par posted earlier, it will give you a good laugh. It is THAT absurd…
