Duncan and Will are at Cannes for BridgeToTheStars.net this week. Today has been a hectic day – a photo shoot and press conference for Duncan, whilst Will had the privilage of personally questioning the cast in a roundtables event. We’ll have much, much more on this later. For now, we’re going to present you with a transcript we slaved over long into the night this evening, only to be presented with the full trailer upon going online. You can now view most of the footage yourself, but not all of it is in the trailer and a transcript it useful anyway, so enjoy.
We’ve also posted a review of the footage and noted some significant elements – which also apply to the trailer.
Review
New Line have been showing footage at Cannes of their most important film this year – The Golden Compass. The footage was around 10 minutes in length and featured brand new scenes, plus updates from the footage shown at the January set visit. Now we’ve been to see the reel twice, we’ve typed up a full and accurate transcript of the footage for you to enjoy. You can head straight there to read it, but here are our thoughts on the footage as a whole.
The footage essentially runs through the storyline of the film chronologically, all the way to its conclusion. Previewed in one of Cannes’ many cinemas, the footage is almost overwhelming. The most bombastic scenes from the book have been chosen for the trailer and come to full life here on the big screen – Iorek bursting out the Trollesund priest’s house and slamming his forefeet onto the floor with a resounding boom, du-du-du – this film is clearly going to be a visceral experience at the cinema.
Dakota Blue Richards takes centre stage in the footage. The public has heard only one line from her so far – in the leaked teaser trailer – but here she has much more to do, interacting with Mrs Coulter, Iorek and others. The good news is that her acting seems to be quite good – it’s hard to judge on such little evidence, particular with no time for much physical emoting, but she delivers her lines capable. We don’t have a young Anakin from Star Wars Episode 1 on our hands. Dakota has some vintage Lyra moments to savour – declaring “no-one can make me a lady†and spitting off a Jordan college roof. This is echoed towards the end of the film, where Lyra spits at the ground in front of the line of Tartar soldiers preventing the children escaping Bolvangar. It’s a nice way to wrap the film neatly around.
With the CGI now almost fully in place, design decisions made by the film’s various artists become clearer. Lyra’s London is really nothing like the Victorian-esque city suggested in the book; Mrs Coulter and Lyra’s ride in to the city on the Sky Ferry (a zeppelin) introduces us to the cityscape in dramatic fashion and, whilst some may still not like the more futuristic imagination of Lyra’s world, the aesthetic is nothing if not striking.
The Magisterium’s tower is the epitome of this design. The tower itself is huge, lording it over London and visible from anywhere in the city. In one scene, we see Mrs Coulter and Fra Pavel walking and talking in a long avenue filled with glass and trees, with the tower looming in the distance behind them. It’s fantastical and obviously meant to emphasis the sheer power of the Magisterium. As to who exactly the Magisterium are – Church, fascists or just plain dogmatists – we’ll have more tomorrow in our interviews with Chris Weitz and Daniel Craig especially. There was a scene shown in the footage which seemed to be a film addition: Fra Pavel and a man dubbed as “Magisterium Emissary†– the leader of the Magisterium in Brytain – talk at the top of the tower, almost in the clouds. The Emissary’s actor is named in our guide-books as Derek Jacobi and it’s unclear whether he’s actually playing a character from the book or not – he seems a Father McPhail type figure if that is the case.
A proper sighting of Lee Scoresby’s balloon also elicited relief. The toy prototype resembles a sci-fi monstrosity and promotional images of the balloon – for example, on the movie tie-in books – had it the same. However, on screen, the balloon is a much more sedate affair. It is a large canopy, held up by a balloon on either side – the balloons however are not shiny and silver, but more realistic and drab, with electric bolts flickering around their bottom as they power the craft along. It’s not a traditional balloon by any means, but again, it’s visually striking – and not as ridiculous as first feared.
Absent for so long from promotional images, we at least see daemons in the flesh. Scenes which were previewed earlier with characters talking to thin air have been brought to life, and daemons scrury and scamper all over the place. There are some humourous moments with the daemons – as seen in the transcript – and they seem to have been handled well thus far in fitting them into existing shots. One vexing question has also been answered about daemons – just how they’ll be shown to talk on film. The answer: lip-synching. It can be corny and the jury is still out, but the little shown seemed bearable, with the mouths not making the full movements, just enough to indicate talking. Iorek is done much the same, as all the armoured bears will be.
One omission was noted – the witches do not seem to fly upon their cloudpines at all. Their lovely floating motion of flying is seen some more, but for all we looked, we could not see any cloudpines in evidence and their legs did not seem to be positioned such to wrap around one. It’s possible they will be added in digitally later, but with so much of the CGI done, it’s odd that they haven’t been already, if they are going to be.
The footage ends with a real cruncher. After the logo has faded, we seen Iorek Byrnison burst upward and rip Ragnar’s (Iofur’s) jaw clean off. The clip cuts too quickly to see the bloody aftermath (if any) but it gives a small taste of how powerful the epic bear flight – the real action climax of the film – is shaping up to be. Much more can be written about even this brief reel of footage, but the feelings we’re left with after watching it are definitely ones of optimism. New Line seem to have a clear direction in mind for the film and the cohesive vision is sure to generate an enjoyable film at the very least.
Transcript
As before, the dark shape of the New Line logo revolved onto the screen, heralded by the epic score.
Then at once the camera flys over the sprawling metropolis of London, to the left, a red and gold Zeppelin hums through the shot.
NARRATOR
There’s a world we cannot see, a world parallel to our own. With witches,
Seraphina Pekkala glides wistfully over white mountains towards the shot, arms outstretched, and without cloudpine. Whe then see an armourless Ragnar(Iofur) sitting on an icey throne, his claws tap the cold metal.
NARRATOR
Where Ice Bears are the bravest warriors,
—
A cat moves stealthly along a Jordan College Corridor. We then see feet walking, Lyra’s feet. A mouse pads along beside them. It turns.
NARRATOR
And Daemons, physical manifestations of people’s souls,
Mouse Pantalaimon shifts into a grey, furry wildcat and hisses at the real cat, it scarpers away. Then Pan catches up with Lyra.
PANTALAIMON
It was as if she had never seen a Daemon before.
Lyra grins.
LYRA
Come on Pan.
—
Fra Pavel enters a spotless, cold room in the London Magisterium Tower. In the centre sits the Magisterial Emmissary played by Derek Jacobi.
NARRATOR
It is a world dominated by the Magisterium, which intends to control everything.
Lyra climbs the stairs and emerges in the exspansive dininng area of Jordan College, laid tables line the left and right, and the Master’s is visible in the distance.
—
NARRATOR
Where the curiosity of a child … will endanger that.
Lyra is in the retiring room inspecting the projector, she hears a noise. She darts into the wardrobe. Grey, bristling Stelmaria barges through the door and begins to prowl through the room. A confident and assertive Asriel follows her, and a butler follows him.
Asriel addresses the scholars, clustered around the projector table. Only a small portion of the projection is visible. Lyra peeks through a pane of glass.
SCHOLAR
Is that light going up or coming down?
ASRIEL
It is not light, it is Dust. I intend to follow the Dust upstream. To another world. Where there is no Magisterium.
FRA PAVEL
(coldly)That is heresy.
ASRIEL
That is the truth.
—
Lyra is sitting in at the High Table, facing the Master himself. The table is fully laid and seated, behind her, the other tables are also populated by lines of black suited men.
Mrs Coulter walks elegantly towards the Masters table
MASTER
(To Lyra)Your metaphysics tutor has mentioned to me that you have not been following your classes. Sometimes it’s best to do what other people tell you.
MRS COULTER
I would disagree.
LYRA
(Quietly to Pan) She put him in his place.
Everyone at the table rises to greet Mrs Coulter. She takes a seat beside Lyra.
MRS COULTER
(Magnanimous, Kind) I’ll be heading North soon again Lyra, and I´ll need an assistant.
Pan, an Ermine, sitting on her knee changes from brown to white. (Awww)
LYRA
(Smiling) Me? The North?
MASTER
I am not sure that is in accordance to Lord Asriel’s wishes for Lyra’s education.
MRS COULTER
(Cold smile) Let me deal with Asriel.
—
Lyra and Asriel walking in a small garden of Jordan. Stelmaria clasps Pan in her jaws, then throws him off as she exists the shot.
ASRIEL
Listen to the Master Lyra. I won’t have you scurrying around like a street urchin!
LYRA
(Defiant) But you never do as you are told!
Lord Asriel walks away, Stelmaira stalks after him.
ASRIEL
Try and behave.
—
Lyra and Roger are walking across the roof of Jordan college, balancing on a ledge. Pan is a wildcat, Sal is a plummer terrier. Sal slips on the ledge and slides down, then shifts into a sparrow and flutters around them.
LYRA
(Eating a plum)Lord Asriel wants to take me to the North, but first I am going to spy on the Gobblers for him.
ROGER
The Gobblers only take poor kids, if they were to take you, everybody would go looking for you. You’re a lady!
LYRA
(Indignant, finishing the plum)Nobody can make me a lady!
Lyra spits out the plum seed, it hurtles down off the roof and hits a passing scholar, causing him to drop his books.
LYRA
If you were taken, I’d come and rescue you.
Roger grins.
—
Roger walks down a damp alley. Sal barks in her Terrier form as a golden monkey perches on the alley wall. Sal shifts into a butterfly then flutters up into the monkeys hands. The monkey then cruelly pinches it’s wings.
ROGER
(In pain) Let us go!
—
The Master hands Lyra the small pouch containing the alethiometer.
MASTER
This is an alethiometer. Lord Asriel wanted you to have it. Keep it to yourself. It is important to keep it hidden, Mrs Coulter must not know about it …
Lyra and Mrs. Coulter emerge out onto a green expanse within the grounds of Jordan College, a Red and Gold Magisterium Zeppelin hovers waiting for them.
The Zeppelin soars over green, fields and farms. London looms on the horizon. The Zeppelin is now flying over London, Lyra and Mrs Coulter stand together in the tip window looking out.
MASTER
… it is important to all creation.
—
Lyra and Mrs Coulter arrive at her Luxurious flat, servants line the white, spotless rooms. Wherein we see Lyra being fitted with her light blue dress. Then, she is sitting with Mrs Coulter getting her fingernails done.
—
Mrs Coulter stands beside Fra Pavel under the looming Magisterial Tower.
MRS COULTER
Lyra has the Alethiometer.
FRA PAVEL
Can she read it?
MRS COULTER
Of course not.
FRA PAVEL
Are you sure? Are you familiar with the Witches’ Prophecy?
MRS COULTER
You think Lyra is the child that the prophecy speaks of? That’s impossible.
Lyra lies on her bed, reading the alethiometer.
LYRA
It’s telling us that Mrs Coulter is behind the Gobblers, and that if we give the alethiometer to her, everyone will die. (the last symbol the alethiometer lands on is the Hourglass, with the skull above)
Seeing Mrs Coulter enter the room, Lyra tucks away the alethiometer under her pillow as Coulter rests on the end of her bed.
—
Lyra and Mrs Coulter are sitting in her flat across from one another.
MRS COULTER
I know the Master gave you something before you left. An alethiometer. I want you to give it to me. If you do not give it to me, I will be displeased.
Mrs Coulter’s Daemon leaps on top of Pan – in wildcat form – and grapples with the younger Daemon. Mrs Coulter herself grabs Lyra’s wrist, hard.
LYRA
Let him go! It hurts!
Lyra slams the window of Mrs Coulter’s apartment from outside fiercely, leaving Coulter in despairing anger behind the glass as her daughter flees into London.
MRS COULTER
Lyra!
Lyra runs through the dark London streets, still wearing her blue dress, past vendors and shady denizens.
Gyptians appear, gruff, rifle wielding, one man cocks his gun.
FRA PAVEL
(To Magisterial Emissary) The word is out about the Lyra child.
LYRA
(To the Gyptians) I need to go to the North.
—
SERAFINA
(To Lyra) The Magisterium were not able to expand their power further before, but things are changing. The witches haven’t decided what side they are on yet, so I don’t know if the next time I will face you we’ll be friends, or enemies.
—
Lord Asriel talks to Lyra in his Svalbard ‘prison’, with Roger tailing behind.
LORD ASRIEL
How did you get here?
LYRA
I tricked Mrs Coulter.
LORD ASRIEL
I’d like to learn that trick.
—
LEE
(To Lyra)If I were you, I would hire myself an armoured bear.
—
Iorek explodes through the priest’s house with a thunderous crash. He rears up on his hind legs and lets forth a mighty roar, before pounding down on his front legs. The crowd shuffles backwards, soldiers level their rifles, and Lyra takes a rearward step, before running forward.
LYRA
Iorek Byrnison! Please don’t fight! If you do, these people will be killed and it’ll only make rescuing the kids harder!
The barrel of a gun from offscreen juts into the police captain’s cheek – the camera follows the barrel to reveal Lee Scoresby.
LEE
Let’s not be too hasty.
The police captain freezes and sways uneasily, aware of the barrel in his face.
LEE
No need for a dust up … Howdy Iorek! Y’ joining us on this turkey shoot?
IOREK
I have a contract with the child.
Lyra gives a furtive look.
Arctic landscape and clouds roll by.
NARRATOR
The Magisterium wants to control every world,
Lyra stands in the snow outside Bolvangar, walking ahead of the line of freed children facing off against a line of Tartar guards. She spits defiantly in the snow as the Tartar leader gazes on.
NARRATOR
Nothing will stop them.
Lyra and Serafina are engaged in battle in the fields outside Bolvangar. The camera tracks a witch flying up in an arc before swinging down and firing an arrow into the melee. Other witches are visible in the sky, also joined in battle. A guard faces Lyra, from his right, Serafina materialises (possibly using the deception spell) then impales him with her knife. A flash of the scene where Lyra falls from the balloon.
Lyra races across the snow to rescue Roger from Lord Asriel’s clutches, but his device to break through the Northern Lights fires at the boy and the screen fades to white.
Bursting back out from the black screen, Iorek leaps forwards and rips Ragnar’s (Iofur’s) jaw clean off and the clip cuts abruptly.
The footage finishes on The Golden Compass logo; the ‘o’ is formed from a spinning alethiometer as last seen in the leaked teaser trailer.
Thanks for the review and transcript! The info was very interesting. I’m glad religion, violence and the dark aspects of the books will be in the movies.
Wow!! Thank you for the review! It’s sound good 😀
I think I must say that this transcript is rather more detailed and accurate than HDM.org’s version.
Thank you, guys!
“I’d like to learn that trick”…hahaha!! This footage seems very promising, much more so than the new teaser trailer. I hope the theatrical trailer is similar to this in its structure (obviously it would be much shorter though).
Hey, if you’re interested, those “black suited” men in the background of that shot you’re referring to, I believe are Oxford students in black gowns (like the kind you wear at graduation day), unless you’re talking about a different bit!!
Does anyone know where to find the actual 10 minute footage? (not the trailer or the transcript)
It was press- and Cannes-only, so New Line won’t be putting it out themselves – there was strictly no recording allowed there. We’ll see if it pops up somewhere else on the internet, but I doubt it. Hence our transcript!
in the scene where roger appears and the golden monkey raps sal, is Mrs. coulter there?? maybe this scene substitutes the tony makarios rap, because i think is important to see mrs. coulter raping a child…
Technically Mrs. Coulter isn’t raping anyone. In the book, she never touches anyone else’s daemon. The golden monkey coaxes the child’s daemon away until the child decides to follow. It’s not rape, daemons touch each other all the time. And even if the part where the Bolvangar doctor grabs Pantalaimon is an obscure reference to rape, we still should not refer to it as such.
just out of interest – does anyone know if the pronunciation of “daemon” in the film is “dee-mon” (as it should be) or “day-mon” – as some sections of the website have it
it’s dee-mon. they’ve confirmed it.
this sounds so great!
also… for those who saw the footage, did Godley or Highmore voice Pan? Please say Godley {:/
Duncan reckons it was Highmore, but neither of us were looking out for a chnage. He pegged it as rather high and girly though, so seems likely it was Highmore.
Godley is an actor though… maybe he was shooting for a high voice 😛 GOD! I hope so, I feel the most upset over this. I wish they decided on Paul Bettany replacing Godley (even though I like Godley better as Pan in my head.)
This sounds good! Better then the trailer for sure. I still don’t like the more modern city though… the zeppelin isn’t even a balloon as far as i can tell!
So how comes roger was not at the cannes as he plays a main character role,he must be within the top 6 lead roles. I agree with satchel they are hiding his identity. If you look at IMDB Movie info he is listed at the bottom with no picture. But he has been in other films so he must be good or they would`nt have picked him!!
Thanks for this, its lookingpromising. I notice though that in all the mentions of the Magisterium, religeon was not actually mentioned. it was implied ‘Fra’ (religeous title) and ‘Heresy’ for example but not mentioned.
I’m really glad that they’re not mentioning religion too much in the previews (and I hope it doesn’t play a central role in this movie). The beauty of the series is the way the plot is sooo good and the message is subtle (at least until The Amber Spyglass). I would love for tons of good little Christian robots to go see this movie, get hooked on the story, read the books, and actually start to question their faith (or at the very least, the tyranny of organized religion). I think this film, if well received, could enlighten many Americans, and thus have a beneficial impact on American culture. It’s a far-fetched hope, but hey, I have “faith” in the HDM series.
