Defining Daemons
Posted on by

New Line have released a new video to promote The Golden Compass. Entitled “Defining Daemons”, it features the stars of the movie – Daniel Craig, Nicole Kidman and Dakota Blue Richards – discussing one of the most integral parts of the book and film – daemons. There’s the best footage yet of daemons on screen, which has been mostly missing from earlier trailers. There’s also words from Freddy Highmore (playing Pantalaimon) and Ben Walker (Roger). Watch the video below.

I think Nicole Kidman’s smile is very Coulter-ish during the few seconds she’s talking. And seeing Lee and Hester actually interact on the screen nearly made me sob – they’re still the most adorable “pairing” of human and daemon I can imagine.

  2. Skye says:

    This is perfect. Just perfect.
I never considered the fact that Dakota and Freddy would be doing their lines together. I found it very interesting to see them in this video.

    Awww…Freddie Highmore…

  4. Aryl says:

This is fantastic. I’m curious if the music is by Alexandre Desplat.

  5. Kevin McCain says:

Am I the only one that always pronounced it “Day-mon” instead of “demon”?

  6. andria says:

    COOLIO!!!!

  7. jammer says:

This only kind of bugs me because I feel that when the movie comes out on dvd, this will be one of the only special features on it…But interesting overall.

  8. Luis says:

Hey, Kevin, I used to say day-mon as well. But that´s maybe because I read the Brazilian translation.
And it´s really superb (the video). I think they´ve left an important question off though: the eyes of the daemons. As already mentioned in these comments, they´ve got the eyes of the characters -and that’s a very philosophical question, that is.

  9. Steve says:

I saw some videos from the game on Gamespy that show how Lyra and Pan work together in the game. It looks great! I wish I had a daemon now!
If I knew how to post videos I would add them here!

this is really great!! the trailer and comic con were both very fast paced so this is really cool cause you can see more of a scene before changing to the next. yeah im confused because first dakota has to act out a scene herself then she goes back and records with freddie highmore..

  11. Luis says:

Emma, I think that Dakota just “re-records” the scene just in order to have rythm with Freddie. Then, I think they mix it, so only Freddy’s voice is used.
Or maybe every single scene is dubbed and then edited in order to have perfect sound (haha! ridiculous theory, though).

  12. Jess says:

Awesome!! They look fantastic!! I was worried about the sheer amount of CGI, that it would all look a bit ridiculous but it’s seemless, like when he changes from a polecat to an ermine. Or a mouse to a cat. It’s a shame because Freddie would have made an amazing Will but they’ve used him now! Dakota and Freddie look great together!

  13. Schrodinger's Cat says:

I once shared a house with a Christian, and she was adamant that animals don’t have souls. Her attitude made me mad, but alas, it’s how most religions/people think. Animals are soulless. So when I first read His Dark Materials, my heart leapt with glee — people’s souls take the shape of animals. Wow, Pullman really stuck it up them, what a way to get back at religions who insist animals don’t have souls. He made our souls animals! Totally brilliant. And it’s true. Animals are our souls, and all life is sacred. XD

  14. tato says:

like almost everythinhg, just the golden monkey im still think needs more work, but nicole is great.

  15. felice says:

I also though it to have the pronunciation of “day-mon”, for the spelling of the word seemed to articulate that it was different from “demon”. but the word daemon, going back to greek mythology, is usually pronounced as demon

  16. Marie says:

wow I love the scene with mrs coulter and lyra. nicole kidman is brilliant. I watched the scene like 10 times now. I can´t wait for the movie. mrs coulter is the best, she is so interesting!

  17. Kyrillion says:

‘He made our souls animals! Totally brilliant. And it’s true. Animals are our souls, and all life is sacred. XD’

Interesting theory but poorly thought-through: in HDM having daemons is what makes human different from other animals. Bears are an interesting grey area as animals of human-level intelligence.

  18. Brad says:

Um so I love Hester now. I mean i never pictured her with a thick southern accent for some reason but it fits PERFECTLY.

  19. Jess says:

It’s funny I never thought her accent would match his either I always thought of her having this posh, English accent sort of like Joanna Lumley. I think it works really well as well though.

  20. Kinders says:

I want to be nice, but doesn’t anybody else think the CG daemons look dreadful? Does anybody know whether they’re finished? Iorek talking in the trailer and Stelmaria’s entrance I thought looked particularly cheap.

  21. Goblin says:

Wow, the interviews with the stars of this film were good, the Daemons interaction looks great, The actor Ben Walker playing the part of Roger is a real sweetie I hope we see more of him.Kinders I disagree with you and I would suggest that you wait to the film comes out then make your comments

  22. Alex says:

Hmmm. For some reason i always imagined pan to have an adult voice. He seems to be the mature, sensible part of Lyra giving her advice in the early part of the series, so i suppose that’s why.

  23. Kinders says:

I did ask whether they’re finished, Goblin. I did ask.
