Craig and Kidman to return for sequels
Posted on by jessia

The official film blog has posted two items from from the 24 August issue of Entertainment Weekly. The magazine indicates that she and Daniel Craig have both signed on to return for the next two films. Nicole Kidman comments on her role as the Magisterium’s villain, saying in the article, “The Catholic Church is part of my essence. I wouldn’t be able to do this film if I thought it were at all anti-Catholic. Of the religious elements in His Dark Materials, Kidman concedes, “It has been watered down a little.” Craig and director Chris Weitz also share their feelings about the production. See the scans here. Thanks to Mockingbird for letting us know.

thats good to hear, but im going to wait and see how well the first film does before i decide whether i want to see the next.

  2. Virgile says:

grrr….where do they see any reference to Catholicism in The Golden Compass? It is Calvinism not Catholicism which is present in ‘The Golden Compass’ with its Seat in Geneva and not in Rome.

Otherwise, great news about the sequels likely to take shape.

  3. Eliza says:

Who is Nicole kidding? The whole trilogy, particularly the last book, is anti-religion. Seeing as Catholicism is a religion, I think that counts.

  4. jessia says:

she can see it how she likes if she wants to justify her work in it. i think she might mean that it doesn’t challenge any of the things she finds valuable in her relationship with catholicism. people’s personal relationships with the religions they practise don’t always follow with general interpretations of or views about those religions.

I think what Kidman means is exactly what Pullman has said himself…

“The problem for those who think there’s an anti-religious anti-moral bias in the books comes when they haven’t actually read the books: of course there’s a criticism of organised theocratic tyrannical religion but who can disagree with that?”

This is the first radical Christian news article I’ve seen… This is the kind of ignorance we’re going up against, people.
    -points to Pullman’s above quote-

I’d just linked to that article too over at the forum: http://www.bridgetothestars.net/forum/viewtopic.php?p=378151#378151

Kidman’s comments about Catholicism seem to have brought them out of the woodwork. It’s from a site which hosts articles about how Harry Potter is bringing down America, so I wouldn’t take it too seriously.

  8. Skye says:

Wow, Will. That was a quick response!

I suppose I should read the forums more often… I can never get into those things.

I just hope that people don’t listen to people like them. I am Catholic, and I love these books. I don’t particularly like the idea of having to defend either my faith or my liking of the books anymore than I do already.

  9. Schrodinger's Cat says:

His Dark Materials is not the Da Vinci Code for kids. >:(

    Well here we go again…

Yes, we all acknowledge that some things are changed from book to film but I think it’s fundamentally dishonest to ‘water down’ certain elements simply because they may offend
certain people, especially when those elements are absolutely fundamental to the plot of the trilogy.

Oh, and to remind Ms Kidman et al of the religious standpoint of the triology, this is what Lyra says in the final paragraph of Amber Spyglass as she muses on her mission in life…

    Quote:
    ———
    ” and then we’ll build…”

“and then what?” said her daemon sleepily. “Build what?”

“The republic of heaven.” said Lyra
