Chris Weitz Answers More Questions
Posted on by Will

MTV have posted the second part of their Q & A session with the director of The Golden Compass, Chris Weitz. This time, Weitz answers questions on portraying the relationship between daemons and humans on-screen without the crutch of narrative exposition (difficult); the use of the term “golden compass” in the finished film (limited) and Philip Pullman’s involvement in the production (extensive).

Weitz reveals the length of the movie will be around two hours, noting his dislike of an “inflationary trend” in movie-length. In addition, Yahoo are listing the movie at 1 hour and 53 minutes long, with Brazilian distributor PlayArte echoing. Weitz does however seem to want to leave the door open for a more extensive cut of the film later on: “If New Line is interested I could see doing a version of “The Golden Compass” which goes into more depth (and length); I reckon this would be of real interest to fans of the book and people who like the film.”. talking about movie length, I just saw in the Brazilian distributor´s website that the film will have 1 hour and 53 minutes.

“A Bússola de Ouro estréia no dia 25 de dezembro nos cinemas brasileiros e terá 1h53 minutos de duração.”

my word… i was just watching some golden compass bits on the web… and my mum is here for a visit… and she told me “did you know it’s anti-god… i got an e-mail about it.”

AMAZING… i can’t believe even my parents are being turned off by crazy radical christians.. and what’s worse is… apparently they’ve told my younger 11 year old brother about it and aren’t letting him see it.. they told him it’s bad and he shouldn’t be interested… =(

    amazing..

YES! A Director’s Cut! A Golden Compass Extended Edition!
    That would be beautiful…

Anway… the length surprised me a little. I’d thought it’d be a little over two ours, but no matter. I guess, it wouldn’t take that long to tell the story.
I was also thinking that maybe one of the reasons why they cut the last bits was because the movie felt like it was too lengthy… if that is the case, I hope the cut was for the best! 🙂

  5. Zoe says:

I very much hope that New Line does agree to an extended version…Hopefully the cinema version will not cut anything important but extended stuff would never be a bad thing *clings to her extended LOTR DVDs*

  6. holl says:

  7. holl says:

before i forget, can anyone point me in the direction of a clip of iorek with nonzo anozie as the voice?

  8. Brian says:

holl, View the original teaser trailer, there’s a snippet w/ Nonzo’s voice. It’s on youtube or yahoo, probably everywhere by this point.

  9. ian says:

Or you can just go to the trailer section of this website.

  10. holl says:

    thank you!

oh holl… I agree its a good thing to be no more than 3 hours as well. King Kong was ridiculously and unnecessarily long. It overstayed its welcome by about a half an hour.
