Bill Donahue claims Catholic boycott of TGC was a success
Posted on by Kinders

Bill Donahue, President of the Catholic League, yesterday cited the Catholic League’s boycott of the film The Golden Compass as evidence that he is not just giving the movie “Angels and Demons” free publicity by objecting to it, saying TGC’s sequels have not been made because of its box office failure.

it’s not really the boycott alone, but coupled with the idea of selling off foreign profits in advance for extra funds, that failed the film. if they did make TSK without doing this, then it would be a success, as TGC was outside of the US. now if new line did make the films, mr. donahue might feel a little bit like an idiot.

I suspect it will take a lot more than that to persuade Bill that he’s an idiot!

My impression, without having seen the film, is that it was a very expensive but ultimately poor production. Unless you’re Michael Bay, that’ll kill pretty much anything. I can’t think of any other examples of religious boycotts that did much damage to the product.

let that moron think what he wants. The sales of the book were still strong, and I’m sure “The Book of Dust” will keep the flame burning. I mean, there are philosophies and books I don’t care for, but I think trying to repress them doesn’t do any good, just he opposite. Also, because “The Davinci Code”, there wasn’t much of a thrill of seeing a religiously controversial movie, since by then, it was pretty much “been there, done that”. As for the film, I think a lot of the matter of it not being the big hit (in North America, at least) many of us (myself included) thought it would be, is because New Line didn’t handle the material the same way it did LOTR with reverence, but with a pair of tongs. Given the nature of the film industry, and the way that the Christian Nationalist movement had lots of publicity then, maybe there was no solution anyway.

But they did it by spreading lies and misinformation to scare parents into preventing them letting their kids see the film.
So much for being honest, or even letting people make their own educated decisions.
Either way, their protest sparked my interest in the film, resulting in me buying and reading each part of the HDM series…

Mr Donahue is a very small minded person, I have just come back from the United States and everyone I spoke to from American said that they loved TGC and wanted to see the other two films. If tha Americans didnt like the film how comes it took $22million dollors for DVD`s and $11 million in rentals. The film was simply a Fantasy film for the fans of Phillip Pulmans books which have won numerous awards around the world. Mr Donahue has simply deprived people from seeing the adoption of these books and New Line Cinema should go ahead with the trilogy. And NO Mr Donahue you didnt win because the film took twice the amount it cost to make and won an Oscar. So New Line lets get on with it PLEASE!!!
