An Extra's Experience
Posted on by Will

An extra on The Golden Compass, Jamie Sutherland, has written for us an account of his times at the set. A great fan of the books, Jamie (24) pursued a part in the movie and secured the role of an extra in the Jordan dining room scene, filmed at the Old Royal Naval College in Greenwich. He recalls, “When I first entered the dining hall, I have to admit I felt a shiver down my spine. I was standing in the world I had imagined and loved. To me it was a beautiful realization and felt other-worldly, even though in reality I was standing in a room with barely any strange props or gimmicks.” Read more.

Thank you so much for sharing your experience with us. I'm sure it will stay with you forever, and for the rest of us, it offers at least an extra ounce of hope that this movie will turn out to be all that we are hoping for. So thanks again for taking the time to jot down your thoughts and observations and for taking your role in the movie seriously.

You are an excellent writer and you have a great website. Thanks for writing about your experiences, you wrote it in a way that we could experience it as well. Just like you, I immediately loved the Golden Compass series from the first time I began reading them at age 13. Detemination is what's needed to become an actor and you have plenty of that, good luck!

Wow – what an opportunity! You were right to jump at it – it sounds like everyone involved with this project, right down to the extra Scholars at Oxford, are giving this their all to make it a wonderful production. And you had a chance to not only be on the set, but to create a character straight from Lyra's world, too – even if the other extras were more keen on football. (Hey, for all we know, Jordan scholars are avid cricket nuts or something). Thanks for sharing all of this with us, and best of luck in the future!
