Special TV Preview: Ruby in the Smoke
Posted on by

“On a cold, fretful afternoon in early October, 1872, a hansom cab drew up outside the offices of Lockhart and Selby and a young girl got out and paid the driver. Her name was Sally Lockhart; and within fifteen minutes, she was going to kill a man.” The BBC's adaptation of Philip Pullman's first book in the series, Ruby in the Smoke, is set to air this Christmas and an advance screening is to take place at the National Film Theatre. Pullman will take part in a Q&A following the preview. You can book tickets online at the NFT's website.

Oh wow, I've been waiting to see this for the longest time, is there any word on when it's going to be shown on tv?

  2. brendon says:

Apparently, Christmas Eve – but that may be off a bit. The schedules aren't set in stone, as I understand it. But it is certainly during the Xmas hols… and the NEXT is already in post-production…

  3. Iceman says:

I just read that book, I had no idea they were making a film of it!

I'll have to see it sometime 😉

  4. mysterygal says:

omg!iv read that!!i had NO idea they were making a film though.
the first book was good but i got bored after the 3rd

  5. James says:

This is a bit off topic but I just wanted to let people know that a composer has been choosen for HDM and it is Alexandre Desplat. This is what IMDB is saying anyway. His most recent films are The Queen and The Painted Veil. I think he is a good choice. I am pleased. 🙂 I hoped this wasn't already mentioned. If it's old news I apologize.

  6. IanG says:

*sigh* Probably can't see that … doesn't fit in with the trains home 🙁

  7. Annabel says:

Can't wait, love these books too. Mysterygal, the fourth book is very different from the other three and involve the return of adelaide! Best of the lot, READ IT! 😀

  8. Willl says:

I wanted to put when it was being broadcast, but I couldn't find out a date.. I'd have thought we'd have heard by now if it was this Xmas.

James: thanks, I'll have a look at that when I get home. I'd forgotton about the composer somewhat; it was another chap previously – someone who had worked with Anand Tucker before, so obviously he got the push too!

  9. IanG says:

I think that we will see it at Christmas Will, as everyone has been pretty specific that it will be then (or in that fortnight) … The BBC have said it's then, as have Piper and Pullman and like everyone …

  10. tari says:

i really want to go to that seeing as Pullman will be there, but its the same day of my exam and i wont be able to get there in time :crying:

On the IMDB message boards some people are saying it will be shown on boxing day.

  11. chicara says:

  16. an says:

arrrghh!! how can billie piper be playing sally lockhart???? that is just not right. aaaahhh. why?!??!?!

  17. Annabel says:

Well, twas pretty good. Not superbly excellent or anything but it is nice to see one of your favourite books interpreted by the BBC. The casting director, however, should be shot. Billie piper wasn't too bad but they got fred all wrong, and seemed to age jim by about 5 years. A bit rushed too.

  18. vicky says:

the sally lockhart books r my favourite books ever and i hope phillip pullmen does a sequal to the tine princess
