Craig on HDM
Posted on by

Daniel Craig, the actor playing Lord Asriel in The Golden Compass movie, is doing the press rounds with his James Bond film, Casino Royale, releasing this week He had a few words to say on His Dark Materials in one interview:

“Those are three of my favorite books, the Philip Pullman trilogy. Just the timing worked out. New Line came and said, ‘Are you interested?’ And I was interested. I think they are fantastic children’s books. I think they’re about love and they’re about growing up and they’re about how, as adults, we should see the world, and how, for children, growing up is one of the biggest struggles, one of the toughest things you’ll ever do.”

After seeing Bond, there's no question that Asriel was perfectely cast with Daniel Craig. He's exudes power and there will not be a problem believing he is man enough to lead the republic of heaven's forces, dominate Mrs. Coulter or be the determined, somewhat coldhearted, adventurer willing to do whatever it takes to fufill his goal. It really is amazing to see the similarities between the Bond and Asriel character, and Craig is awesome as Bond. Eva Green in one scene says "you're more man than I've ever known," and it's impossible to question this. If Craig is half the man in TGC as he is in Bond, even the people most skeptical about his casting will be thrilled.

Eva Green also seems like a great casting. She is lovely and has a great voice, something I always assumed Serafina possessed. When her character is introduced in Bond, she has a great scene where her and Craig verbally joust with each other, and she does a wonderful job of holding her own, showing the ability to act as a very strong woman. Plus she looks perfect.

So far I think the casting directors have nailed every character. Nicole Kidman obviously is the best choice around for Mrs. Coulter, Sam Elliot may be older than Lee is in the book but after watching several of his movies it's hard to argue you could find a better kind hearted, self sacrificing Texan around. And once again Craig and Green are magnificent.

Well, they are not only for children but they are aimed on them, so I would say that it isn't completely wrong to say that the books are children books. Just like HP isn't only read by children.

What he say's about Lord Asriel isn't completely off either. Which is very important for how he will portray him.

I'm glad to see that so far both CR and TGC is going in the right direction. And it's wondeful to see Craig appreciated, he's a fine actor. I have no doubts that "our little family" is going be a joy to see on the screen.

Alright, first off, Casino Royale itself was amazing. Moving along, Craig is astounding. He is dominating physically and mentally. He carries his own weight. At one point in the movie, Bond is being tortured and he just starts laughing. To me it seemed the perfect Asriel moment, like when he was on the mountaintop at the end of TGC/NL. I can easily see him being the strong presence he is in a majority of the series. Yet at the same time, he is able to look vulnerable. Throughout the movie you see him slipping and falling and getting hurt, you see him sweat. You know that there is always some sort of sweet, sad meaning hidden beneath his clever lines; much like Asriel is when he is with Coulter. As easily as I can see Craig in the beginning of TGC – just a superior image – I can envision him in that scene in TAS while he is talking to Coulter in his room and he just sits and jams the heels of his hands into eyes, simply worn out.

And you know, Eva Green was strong and pretty. She works.

TGC is going to be simply amazing. Just saw Casino Royale (mainly to judge Craig), and it was terrific. Well, Craig was terrific, anyhow.

    Can't wait!

hey, we get Vogue and Nicole Kidman was on the cover for December. there's like 1 sentence about hdm:
She's about to leave for London, where she is playing Mrs. Coulter – "a villain, which I haven't done for a while" – in the first part of Chris Weitz's adaptation of the Philip Pullman children's trilogy His Dark Materials…

  11. Catherine says:

I saw Casino Royale not that long ago and Daniel Craig was FANTASTIC FANTASTIC FANTASTIC! By FAR the BEST Bond yet! He showed a more vulnerable side to Bond which you don't see in the other films as much. He's more human….

Eva Green looks EXACTLY like I imagined Serafina!

    I'M SO EXCITED!!!! :):):):)
