Israeli His Dark Materials Convention

How do you transform the HDM world to Hebrew without changing Oxford to Tel-Aviv and Lyra to Liat? How can you tell apart a scholar and a servant just by the way they speak? How can you find a suitable alternative to technological terms and how do you translate made-up Bible quotes?

BttS Community Member HDM.co.il write to inform us of their second annual convention in Israel this month. The Mythopia Convention will take place on the 24th of August, in Tel-Aviv. The convention is jointly organized by the Israeli His Dark Materials community, the Israeli Tolkien society and the Harry Potter for grownups society. Speakers include various prominent Israeli lecturers such as Yeal Sela-Shapiro, the translator of the HDM books into Hebrew. You can read more about the convention on the convention website. Hey everybody, happy to see these comments.
If you want to know here is some more information about the HDM activities in the convention:

’*His Dark materials’ in Hebrew / Yael Sela- Shapiro – How do you transform the HDM world to Hebrew without changing Oxford to Tel-Aviv and Lyra to Liat? How can you tell apart between a scholar and a servant just by the way he speaks? How can you find a suitable alternative to technological terms and how to translate made-up Bible quotes?

All that and more in a detailed lecture: translating ‘His Dark Materials’ to Hebrew.

*The Lion, the witch and the Subtle Knife / Gili Bar-Hillel – The lecture deals with the use that Narnia and HDM do with the myth of Adam and Eve, in particularly in the way Pullman strictly supplies an anti-thesis to Lewis’s Narnia.

*Universities and scientific research in ‘His dark Materials’ / Dr. Amnon Stupp – Discussion about the way scholars, scientists and the Universities environment described in ‘His Dark Materials’ in comparison to personal experience.
