The Oscar-winning actress hasn't yet accepted the part as she's in the middle of wedding preparations. The deal is therefore termed as “under discussion”. Philip Pullman has in the past said he would like to see Kidman in the role. Read more.

1. nanajiloh says:

Yes, I`ve seen this notice at Cittagazze.Com, the french site. And just a correction: Nicole Kidman is australian, not american.
I hope she accept it. Imagine that: our Mrs. Coulter (`cause I think few people didn`t like her as Mrs. Coulter), the Mrs. Coulter I dream so many times!

2. JV says:

Meh, Nicole Kidman maybe. Who I'd REALLY like to see as Mrs. Coulter is Naomi Watts. That's who I'd ask first.

3. Kinders says:

I didn't post this story since I thought it was dubious at best. Incidentally, I don't think she's right for the part at all.

4. Johnny Q says:

Nice one … except Nicole Kidman is Australian not American, dudes!

5. Ian says:

When did it say she was American? 😉

Sorry guys – i don't follow Hollywood closely, and I made an incorrect assumption. I don't think she's right for the part either.

6. The Bard says:

Yeah…Naomi Watts would be absolutely brilliant for the part…

7. Kinders says:

Naomi…? Am I the only person who thinks an older lady would be far better suited?

8. JV says:

Thank you The Bard. Finally someone who agrees with me. In fact I think Naomi would be better for the part than Nicole. And interesting theory about an older Mrs. Coulter. I'd say she'd be younger like Naomi though.

9. Alewyn says:

10. Alewyn says:

On behalf of my all time favorite actress I would just like to say that Nicole would be ABSOLUTELY POSITIVELY FABULOUSLY AWESOME as Marisa Coulter. Disagree if you want, but you suck so who cares?

~Alewyn and her friend Alyson (who were screaming so loud that Alewyn's mom thought something was wrong)

p.s.- WOW, not weird or anything

11. ADK says:

Even though it doesn't say that Kidman is American, technically she is, considering that she was born in America – minor detail though.

But yeah, I think she'd fit the part well.

12. Ali says:

Oh my gosh… if she accepts the role, the movie will be THAT much better. Not only is she gorgeous and the PERFECT Mrs Coulter, but she's also an amazing actress. Not to mention Pullman mentioned he pictured her as Mrs. Coulter. 😀 I hope she takes the role.

13. Alewyn says:

Yeah, she was born in Honolulu, after all. And yay, someone who agrees with me!! Seriously though, back when I first read HDM I didn't know who she was or what her name was, but I had watched Moulin Rouge a bunch of times. Coulter was and has always been Nicole to me…THIS IS SO EXCITING!!!

14. nikos says:

i would like to see sean young

15. Alewyn says:

…who's Sean Young? :wassat:

16. KittyKat: says:

what? who? you don't mean as Coulter do you? ok, good 🙂
oh yeah, and absolutely great, i really hope she takes it it would be so cool and one less character to wait to find out who they cast for the part…*cough*Lyra*cough*
KKx happeeee 🙂

17. JV says:

Kinders, I knew there was a reason why no-one else thinks Mrs. Coulter shouldn't be old. I found a passage in the Northern Lights/The Golden Compass that describes Mrs. Coulter for the very first time. P66: ""…Lyra, come and say hello to Mrs. Coulter." "Hello Lyra," said Mrs. Coulter. SHE WAS BEAUTIFUL AND YOUNG. HER SLEEK BLACK HAIR framed her cheeks, and her daemon was a golden monkey."
So you see, she IS young and beautiful. She has to be to seduce Charles Latrom in The Subtle Knife. I really think it should be NAOMI WATTS. With black or blonde hair. I'd picture Mrs. Coulter as a blonde Naomi Watts really. You're welcome.

18. Kinders says:

Don\’t be such a coçky brat. Mature women can be beautiful and seductive. I don\’t see why the filmmakers should avoid making Coulter older if it suits her character better.

19. Stratford says:

nicole kidman is an unbelievable actress, and its not the woman has wrinkles or anything. she is young enough for the part to work, i think naomi watts is good but nicole has a much better presence….also if the author suggessted nicole i think she will be great
and yes, she is austrailian

20. tari says:

The way i see it is u got to remember that u see Mrs. Coulter through Lyra's eyes first, and of course she is going to see her as young ans beatiful in contrast to the kind of people she has grown up with. i dont want a say anyone is wrong its just something to think about.

21. Missy-Me says:

She's ok for ms. Coulter. Only I had imagend her with brown hair..:wassat:

22. Missy-Me says:

because of you think naomi watts should play her. (googled her)
Don't agree, I prefer nicole kidman.

23. Alewyn says:

And the funny thing is, Nicole and Naomi are bffs. (I still think Nicole's WAYYYYYYY better) Whoever said it you're right, she has a MUCH better presence.

24. Stratford says:

that's funny they are friends…
i wonder who would/will be offered the part of nicole turns it down (i hope she doesn't…..i've pictured her as mrs. coulter forever)

25. JV says:

Why did you insult me like that? That was completely unprovoked. You're incredibly rude Kinders. OK, to the point: I didn't mean to say I thought she should be like YOUNG young. I mean Nicole is like in her late thirties or something. You know, that's mature, yet it's not old, you know what I mean. So yeah, Nicole would be about the right age and look for the part (or Naomi).

26. Kinders says:

It was your presumptuous and arrogant \”You\’re welcome.\” that caused me to be rude in return. If it was misconstrued then I apologise.

I\’ve rarely before heard somebody in their late thirties being referred to as \”mature\”, and it\’s certainly not what I meant in my previous post.

27. seannnnnn says:

ok all of you arguing about whether nicole would be the right age for the part……. phillip pullman himself has said he would like to see her in the role. so, obiously she is the right age… i mean, only the author of the bloody book wants her in the role. so ha.

28. JV says:

I apologise for any bad behaviour on my part, let's move on.

It's the filmmakers' decision in the end of the day, but i'm sure obviously they'd take into an consideration the creator's imagination. They're changing the books a lot anyway by taking out the religious references to avoid offending religious people in a book partly about not being intimidated by religious people, so maybe they'll grant Pullman at least this. I don't know, we'll all see soon anyway.

29. Kinders says:

Well, Sean, that settles it then.

30. Newbie says:

I think they should get Kate Beckinsale. Beautiful, young, and has black hair. I don't like Nicole Kidman that much. But, what do I know? I'm still on page 60 or so of the Golden Compass..

31. Alewyn says:

3 votes for Nicole (1 from me, 1 from my friend, 1 from my sister)

How 'bout you guys?

32. MIssy-Me says:

I don't know and don't care.
I agree with sean, I mean if philip pullman thinks she's the best actress to play her… He has maked ms coulter so…

33. KittyKat: says:

2, one from me and one from a cat i know who is currently asleep but would like her (fake) vote to be recognised 🙂

34. KK says:

ooookay… what just happened with your slightly random post Kinders?

35. Kinders says:

I deleted it. I thought it was a little harsh, though the sentiment still stands. Now folks will want to know what it said. It said:

philp pulman should m8ke the flms hmself lolzorr!!

36. KK says:

i don't…quite understand it, but whatever with the film, so long as it's good i don't care whi makes it.

37. Kinders says:

The point being that comments like "if philip pullman thinks she's the best actress to play her… He has maked ms coulter so…" and "phillip pullman himself has said he would like to see her in the role. so, obiously she is the right age… i mean, only the author of the bloody book wants her in the role. so ha." are really, really stupid.

38. uhhh says:

and why are sentences like that so utterly stupid? as far as i can tell, you believe them to be stupid based solely on the grammar and spelling errors? Or perhaps sean stated that Pullman has said he would like to see Kidman in the role, and you think this is stupid? because you don't think the author of his own book would have any idea what kind of person should play a character which he wrote? what are you getting at? honestly, do you have anything better to do than to nit pick at other people's posts? (i know i am being hypocritical here, but oh well.)

oh, and if you find any grammar or spelling errors in this post please don't bother expressing your feelings about it. this is a messageboard on the internet, and unlike you, i don't feel the need to take the time editing this piece as if i were writing a midterm in college.

39. Linda says:

I don't want to disappoint how wants Nicole Kidman for Mrs. Coulter role… but seeing her latest pictures on gossip website, she appears to be pregnant… and when the filming will start, she will be waaaaay to big to hide it (IF she's pregnant) :crying:

40. Kinders says:

Christ. Read the messages and find that I removed the post because I thought it was unfairly harsh, and only copied it because somebody asked about it.

It has nothing to do with spelling. It\’s the prevalant notion that Philip Pullman has any idea of what would be best for the film. He doesn\’t; ironically enough, given that this is an argument about people citing Pullman\’s opinions as if they\’re infallible, Pullman has said so himself.

I don\’t have a problem with you excusing capitals or the odd punctuation mark. That was never an issue. But I don\’t see the relevance of this being an internet messageboard. That\’s about as good a reason for being lax with your grammar as \”oh well\” is for being a hypocrite.

41. KittyKat: says:

*apologises VERY sincerely for causing Kinders to copy his post which in turn provoked several long arguementative posts i…couldn't be bothered to read*

42. chris says:

i have been following bridge to the stars for ages and ages and ages – anyway this is my first post – lol – Hi! – i just wanted to add that i think Nichol Kidman is perfect – she is also a very good actress – i know she has done some, well, dodgy films but with a good director she is amazing, she can also be very english! its strange even though coulter is described as having black hair i still seemed to picture her with beautiful long reddish brown hair, and pale skin with a sort of soft sheen – probably because her monkey is golden and she wears fur – balck hair didnt quite fit in my head – so i guess i have seen a kidman type all along! I think she could be really scarey too! especialy to a child she is such a powerful physical presence, 6 foot 4 or something and slender and striking – someone to both admire and to be terrified of – perfect – in my own humble opinion anyway 🙂

43. Gabe says:

I think people need to chill. People have a right to their opinion, and there's nothing stupid about thinking that an author might have some idea what type of character he created. PP may not know much about making movies, but this is a basic component of the *story*, which I think he knows very well about.

Of course perhaps a character can or should be changed to better suit the overall story in film format. There's nothing wrong with having that opinion either.

44. Alewyn says:

Chris- sh's either 5'10" or 5'11", I don't exactly remember.

Linda- First, it's just gossip. And second, she was very thin, it takes a bit of a longer time for pregnancy on someone like Nicole to show up (at least, according to my older sister, please correct me if I'm wrong). So, IF she's pregnant, she may be further along than one might think.

Everyone else- I'm still rooting Kidman.

45. Kinders says:

This will be my final word on it because, as \”uhhh\” has pointed out, I do in fact have better things to do; but casting is not a basic component of the story at all.

46. Alewyn says:

Kinders- Well yeah but…it's fun

47. Rhianna says:

w0w i luv Nicole Kidman, and Naomi Watts, i really think either one of them would be amazing to play the role of Mrs. Coulter. I'm just still here waiting and dying to see the movie!!! =]

48. Kari says:

lol i agree Rhianna. Im dying here as well. I luv Naomi Watts, and Nicole Kidman. I also luv Tilda Swinton from the Chronicles of Narnia, and in my opinion i think she would be a good candidate for the role of Mrs. Coulter if only she were Younger. But i'm for the most part fine with any choice

49. mocaica says:

I've always pictured Mrs. Coulter as young and blonde even though the books state that she's dark haired. I think Nicole Kidman would be a nice choice for the part, but it would have been better if she was younger (some of the pictures of her these days are not flattering)…

50. KittyKat: says:

i wonder who they could cast as Serafina Pekkala? hmm.. :wassat:
