Philip Pullman in conversation with Leonie Gombrich
Posted on by Kinders

Yale University Press writes, “if you would like to hear the story of 'A Little History of the World' [by E.H. Gombrich] first-hand, please join us at Blackwell's, Broad Street, Oxford to hear Philip Pullman in conversation with Leonie Gombrich (Gombrich's grand-daughter) and a reading by his grandson, Carl.” The YUP site has the event marked for Wednesday 15th December, while today's Oxford Mail anticipated it for the 14th. www.blackwells.co.uk, strangely, don't have anything at all to say about it.

First comment – yay. How big is this event? Not too big I would think, or the BBC will have something to do with it eventually. Pullman seems to be operating at the heart of intellectual life in Oxford (which can then be extended to all of England I suppose), and, fankly, I find that downright inspiring.

  2. Kyrie says:

    Frankly – not fankly – yikes. 🙂

  3. The Bard says:

I want to move to oxford, I went there recently (and visited the bench in the botanical gardens :crying:) it's the nicest place you can imagine…well almost.

  4. Kinders says:

Not big at all. But it's Pullman news and thusly it ends up here. (First, of course.)

  5. andrew Kent says:

I am an Oxford resident and keen hdm fan. I have only met Mr Pullman the once (got three books signed) but I have often seen him wondering around Oxford. Anyone wanting to move here however will have to put up with near-Londonesque prices. I will try and make the event.

  6. Alewyn says:

"I have only met Mr Pullman the once"
Only? Only? I haven't met him once!

"but I have often seen him wondering around Oxford."
    lucky, lucky, lucky.

"Anyone wanting to move here however will have to put up with near-Londonesque prices."
I can deal with that, it's Oxford, it's worth it.

  7. Alewyn says:

Forgot to mention, went to Oxford for one measly little day on February 5, 2005. It was probably the best day of my life.

  8. Kyrie says:

To Kinders: I realise this is Pullman\'s news ; thus the reason we are discussing such wonderful topics as books and Oxford. As for the rest of you up there, I share your sympathies.

  9. Kinders says:

Hm? I wasn't chastising you or anysuch..

  10. Kyrie says:

    I know, it\'s cool.
