I'm trying to get a hold of Lyra's Oxford. Every time I try to read I think about it. The ending is soooo sad, too. I can't believe they can never see eachother again. And right after they found out how much they love each other, too....!!

Lol, Lyra's Oxford has already been published! I've read it from my School Library. This series has inspired me to write my own book! Plus, on a more and very silly note for a boy, when I finished this series it did make me break a tear or two, primarily because of such romantic scenery for Lyra and Will and then they having to be thrust apart...I know of another Sequel, but when's it going to be released??? Anybody got any clue?

I know. I cried when Lyra and Will had to be seperated. I know it's been published, but I have to find it. It's not at my schools library...

It's called The Book of Dust. Its not actually a sequel it is like short stories of the characters before the events in His Dark Materials eg. How Mrs Coulter and Lord Asriel met. I don't think Phillip Pullman has completed it yet

Will and Lyra are to meet again in time? I read in wikipedia that in the future Will would become a doctor of somesort and Liza would specialize in the golden compass. Never have I heard that the two would reunited. There parting was quite sad. I never felt so emotional from such a book other than the Harry Potter series. Mind you, I love to read the books more than watching the movie.

The angel (I believe it was Xaphania) told them it would take a lifetime to learn how to do that. Lyra seems to have decided on studying the alethiometer instead.

Maybe they did at somepoint, that is for us to figure out in our minds. we'll never know for sure...

It's possible. I myself wondered why Lyra seemed to totally disregard the idea of learning how to do that since it took a long time. It's too bad Philip Pullman says he's done telling the story of Lyra and Will. =[

I loved Will! He was one of my favorite characters. Anyway, one of the main themes of the story was maturing/growing up. I wish Philip Pullman would come up with something else for Will besides "He'll become a doctor". We didn't get to read anything else about him once he went through the window back to his world but we continued until the end with Lyra. And then Lyra's Oxford after that was just about Lyra again.

No. Will did not change Lyra into a quiet calm girl. No one could ever do that. He did "teach her the value of silence and discretion" which means she didn't feel the need to show off all the time and she could keep secrets to herself, but she was still the same wild, fiery Lyra we all know. Same with Will, she gave him more confidence and and taught him to use lying as a weapon and made him more open to people. They changed eachother for the better without ridding them of their characters. That was the true moral of the story in the end. They will always be who they are, with or without eachother.

And who says she didn't do anything fun anymore? All it was was that she was a little more mature coz of her expieriences and her coming of age.

Poor Will!
Many people would find Lyra's unruliness just as annoying. I'm not saying that I do, I'm only pointing it out. And what is so wrong with sensible and mature people? Maybe Lyra hasn't always been mature, but I think she's been pretty sensible overall throughout the whole trilogy, The Golden Compass included. She knows when and how to act in times of need, she even knows when to be respectful and humble, like during the Gyptian meeting in the first one. She knows to avoid bad situations but in her own unique Lyra-ish way. Such as when the man with the lemur d?ɬ¶mon gets too friendly (she tells him her dad is a murder) or when she is imprisoned in the bear palace and Iofur is in charge (she manipulates his desire to be like a human).
Without Will's matureness, he and Lyra could've landed in trouble numerous times. And not the fun kind of trouble!
One of the main themes of His Dark Materials is the inherent developing of a person (human, mulefa, gallivespian, witch, whatever) from an innocent but ignorant child to a compassionate adult. Without maturing, without Eve having ever bitten the apple, we'd all be a bunch of young mulefas, clumsily, aimlessy wandering without wheels! So to speak of course.

Actually she does do a lot of stopping to look at things in the end of the third book. Like when she sort of explores the mulefa village a bit and takes in little things about her surroundings, like streams and the roads and whatnot.

Like when she observed and wondered about the flock of birds that twisted and turned over the rooftops. And she was ready to face that witch!

Yes me too. She didn't loose her mischieviousness she just grew more mature. Thats the whole point of the story. It's the same with Will, after meeting Lyra he became more easy going and conspicuous. They learnt from eachother and enabled one another to grow emotionally.

But fair enough if you don't like Will though, thats your opinion so I won't trample it. X)
