LO: Cloth map?

Postby Arsenic » Tue May 20, 2003 6:52 pm

So yeah, I've been reading the press releases and such, and they say that Lyra's Oxford is going to contain a cloth map of Oxford.. and so I'm wondering.. what the heck is a cloth map? Like, a foldout peice of cloth, or on the endpages, or what?

Yeah I suppose it will be a large piece of fabric that will fold out and will have the map printed on it. They are going for a kind of quaint authenticity so a cloth map probably fitted their brief better than a paper OS extract.

it'd be cool if the whole book was printed on cloth like those children's books are. just not bright red and blue... but more scroll-ish looking.

Yeah, if it had a kinda light brown tea-stained old parchment colour. That's probably what the map will be like.

I used to have the Discworld map up. I don't think th publishers are going to be using vellum, you know, not if the book is selling at 9.99. :) Do you think you'll put the map up on your wall?

Maybe if they put like metal rings in the corners for easy hanging. Otherwise I wouldn't want to wreck it.

I'm not exactly sure what it is either, but look at the context - it's obviously a fairly expensive fabric. I said it in some other thread, I really hope the map is pull-out and not fold-out. It would make the book really fat if it was stuck in the end, plus you wouldn't be able to take it out of course.

it shouldn't be a fold out. all the goodies that come with the book will be included with the audiobook.

Vellum - A fine parchment made from calfskin, lambskin, or kidskin and used for the pages and binding of books.

Wow, that's gotta be expensive.

the map wouldn't be vellum anyways, since it's usually used for binding. the map would probably just be on something like canvas.
