Im quite indifferent, for the simple reason that when I read it, I thought that it was way too short, and that it had no real story.
But then Rosie got me thinking, that it was a seperate story.
I was hoping for a continuation of the series and was disappointed.
I need to read it again in the context that it is a mini story branching from the original series.
Does that help?

Yes - it would be a big mistake to see it as volume four. There ain't going to be a volume four. LO is an artefact rather than a book, the story Lyra and the Birds is as much a piece of ephemera as Mary's rather curious postcards. It's a short story in the classic short story tradition.I need to read it again in the context that it is a mini story branching from the original series.
And that's the point, surely? LO is a rum old thing, full of things that tease and confound and aren't quite what they seem, and hints and loose threads to follow up.

But then again, why would there need to be any more loose threads, there are many anyway.
We also have then here too.
But I can see where Lyras Oxford is from (Oxford), and it makes sense.
But why the intense protection from the local birds, that slightly puzzles me?

How could it not be worth reading? It's a sweet little book, beautifully illustrated, packed full of tantalizing and incomprehensible clues, has a fun map to browse (my father in-law, a Brasenose man, really loved the map despite not having read any of the books), and finally, more than all the other points, it shows us Lyra again, albeit briefly.

Yeah!!!! Reading that first line "Lyra didn't climb out of her bedroom window much these days..." Gave me such a warm feeling - "Ahhh, she's fine, back in Jordan"and finally, more than all the other points, it shows us Lyra again, albeit briefly.
LO was well worth it, and I'm sure it's gonna be more important than it gives out...

I thought it was nice to see Lyra had moved on. It would be possible that she became consumed by grief, though with her kind of character that isn't really likely. It was good to see she was back to her usual ways, messing about in Jordan.
When in doubt, castle.

I was just releived to hear a story about Lyra again, it would have been nice for a volume 4. I just like Lyra to much so i have to say yes to the poll.

worth reading... but worth buying? it's debatable, depending what price you get it for.

But fezzes, fezzes are just gay. I've no idea why people wear them. It's high time we had a return to bowler caps.

I bought it because it is a very nicely made book. You don't often come across nicely made books these days. I especially liked all the extra stuff, postcards, and pull out map. Very nice...worth reading... but worth buying? it's debatable, depending what price you get it for.

I also like the fact that the cover was made from fabric.
