World Book Night Update
Posted on by Bethan

Tonight is World Book Night, and last night’s even in Trafalgar Square was a rousing success. Philip Pullman was one of many authors, actors and musicians who attended the event. He read out a passage from Northern Lights/The Golden Compass, which co-webmistress Jaya recorded.

In an interview he gave to the BBC, he described the event as a “wonderful idea.”

And good news for Canadian Sraffies! At the event, Margaret Atwood said that she hoped a similar event would be held in Toronto next year, providing there’s enough interest in it.

I was one of the lucky ‘chosen’ 20,000 to distribute books on World Book Night & was very happy to get my first choice, one of my favourite books of all time, Northern Lights! I gave them out on the children’s wards at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge, which was really special… being able to go on the wards & chat to the kids – very humbling – & everyone was sooooo grateful! I gave lots of the books to the children themselves (obviously!), but if they were too young, often gave them copies anyway to give to older brothers or sisters. Parents also got copies, so happy to have some bed-side reading while they stayed overnight with their little ones! Even a granny or two got copies! I also left a few copies at the nurses station for some of the lovely nurses & doctors to read! Much appreciated!
It really was a special night & I feel very proud & privileged to have been part of the whole occasion!
