The LA Times reports that the actor originally contracted to play Lyra’s daemon Pantalaimon – Adam Godley – has been replaced by the 15 year old British actor Freddie Highmore. The youth was apparently chosen for having “a youthful and vulnerable quality, bringing more intimacy between the two characters.”

I don’t know… I hope his voice changed! I always imagined Pan with a grown up, disapproving at times yet playful voice
It seems to make sense that a child’s daemon would have a younger voice.
that does seem better-i wonder how they would’ve told adam godley he’s been replaced?
sorry adam, but you’ve been replaced by a 15 year old.
lol…
I’ve always wondered what Pan sounded like so I’m not as annoyed as I thought I would be about this. Normally his voice is very irritating, unless it’s gotten deeper now that he’s 15 and hopefully doesn’t sound like a mouse like he did in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
I think it hasn’t gone any deeper yet, it’s still pretty high. O.O
I thought it was silly at first, the voice change thing, because I couldn’t imagine Pan with a kiddy voice. But now I see why they did it I kinda got over it and can’t wait to hear his voice. ^^;
I still feel sorry for Adam though. D:
I totally agree with daemon light for Pan’s voice.
thats kind of funny… I’d always thought of Pan as having a more mature voice than Lyra, not one matching (more or less) her own age.
I thought her daemon’s voice was kinda like a conscience. he was like the doubt in the back of her mind when she was in the retiring room. so i always throught his voice would be older to sybolise this. I thought they’re first choise was much better. Oh, well. I guess i just have to hope his voice has gotten deeper…
Hypethetically, if I were making the movies, that’s what I would have done in the first place. I would have Pan have a young child’s voice because he & Lyra are closer than best friends, they’re the same, so they’d be at the same stage of development.
You can’t have a child’s daemon with a disapproving adults voice. Even worse (which is what Godley probably would have done anyway) you can’t have Pan with some kind of squeaky cartoony voice either because then the character will suck. Think Jar Jar Binks actually meant to be taken seriously.
This is better, although Freddie Highmore seems like too obvious a child actor choice. But he was really good in Finding Neverland and apparently the last voice-over he did (for Arthur & The Invisibles) he was said to be “the movie’s only saving grace”(Total Film) so hopefully he’ll be good as Pan too.
I always imagined Pan sounding more adult, but it makes sense that hes got a child’s voice. And Freddie Highmore is ideal casting.
What was Freddie Highmore’s last film? Last time I checked (which was a while ago) he was still like ten.
Don’t ever judge a book by its cover – or voice.. 😀
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is just one film.. People’s voices can change alot all the time, and Highmore’s still a teen. He’ll do fine, I guess.
Though, i too have always iamgined Pan’s voice as constantly disaproving, somehow better-knowing – but still loving and caring…
I think this whole thing is just a dumb rumor! Not even true I expect, because we haven’t gotten any “official” confirmation. I looked on the website and it’s still Adam Godley. There’s a great picture of Pan by the way if you click Godley’s name. Funny though that Highmore and Godley are both in CCF…
blah! this isn’t working! the posting isn’t working
There we go! Okay…I think this whole thing is just a dumb rumor! Not even true I expect, because we haven’t gotten any “official” confirmation. I looked on the website and it’s still Adam Godley. New Line posted about the story on their blog, which I doubt they’d do if it was false.
Hey, cool. I think. Freddie Higmore is cool (Finding Neverland, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory) although I had no idea he was 15, I thought more like 10. I hope he does a good job.
If anyone’s ever heard to the Golden Compass on tape, personally I think Pan sounds perfect and whoever did his voice should do the movie
hmmm this is intresting .. i never imagined what kinda voice Pan would have .. but i think having a childs/teens voice [ as pan was always more responsible than Lyra, he derserves to have more mature voice ] will really .. add an touch to the film
*Punches air* Yes! Yes! Yes!
i allso always pictured pan as having a grown up-mater-a-fact
voice
I can\t beleive a movie is comming out for this!!! anyways, it\s a change, but it’s different
Zayru, yeah, I agree… I imagine all the characters with the voices from the audio books now. 😛
Im just thinking of how much fun it would be the voice of Kirjava (she does not talk alot though) :/
actors put on the voice naturaly when they express the charecter they are playing though and he is trained so i am happy with the replacement………….
I am so glad they changed the actor that was going to voice Pantalaimon’s voice. I always thought it was a young voice beacuase he is Lyra’s daemon and she is still young and so her daemon has to be young as well. I think to was a good choice to have Freddie Highmore voice Pan.
