Voices of the video game
October 9, 2007
The upcoming video game will feature the voices of both Dakota Blue Richards and Fredie Highmore. About her role in voicing the videogame, Dakota commented, “I do find it quite difficult but I find it also fun, in the same way that I found doing the green screen stuff fun [on the film set].” Highmore on Pantalaimon: “To convey the essence of a character you’ve got to believe in it and I think you have to get in to the character, because if you don’t believe in it no one else will.”
The game will see Lyra travelling through the frozen wastes of the North collecting items in order to explore, evade, and deceive her way to rescue a friend kidnapped by a mysterious organisation. Lyra can also use Pantalaimon to collaborate with in-game characters and get through difficult situations.Gamers can also play as Iorek Byrnison, who joins the quest and protects Lyra during their journey using his special attacks to fend off enemies. Players will also be able to unlock secrets and mini-games using the Alethiometer.
The Golden Compass videogame is releasing on PS3, X360, Wii, PS2, PSP, DS & PSP later this year.

Movie Boardgame out this month
October 9, 2007
This October will see the release of the official the Golden Compass board game, produced under license from New Line Cinema. The game comes to us from the award-winning Lord of the Rings game inventor/designers Francesco Nepitello and Marco Maggi, with art taken straight from the eagerly awaited forthcoming film. Sophisticated Games, specialists in literature-based board games, have been confirmed to be producing the game for distributors in Germany, Spain, and Greece, and the United Kingdom.
As far as the game play goes, the game features an alethiometer with moving hands as its centre piece, but also involves cards and tokens which help to influence Lyra’s progress through the story. The makers assure us that the game looks stunning, and that while movie-based games “don’t always push the quality envelope,” they have tried their hardest to make The Golden Compass board game several cuts above the average film-derived game.
You can view the boardgame’s box and the board itself below – click for larger.

September saw the release of yet another companion book to Philip Pullman and his His Dark Materials trilogy. This new book, Discovering The Golden Compass: A Guide To Philip Pullman’s Dark Materials, is written by George Beahm and included within its pages are an autobiographical essay by Pullman talking about his life and work; a 16-page full color insert of new photos showing Oxford, the “city of dreaming spires,” in all its glory; 15 new pen-and-ink illustrations and a full color painting by former Disney artist and Imagineer, Tim Kirk; and complete coverage of Pullman’s talk at the Oxford Literary Festival, in which he and The Golden Compass film producer, Deborah Forte, talk about the considerable challenges in bringing the book to film. You can see the book’s Amazon listing here.
