Lord of the Rings ‘trivial’ says Pullman

MTV’s movies website features an article by Jennifer Vineyard regarding Philip Pullman’s talk in New York a couple of days ago. Amongst other things, Pullman is quoted as finding Lord of the Rings ‘trivial’. There is also some brief video footage which is viewable by those of you in the USA. Read the full article here.

Henry Braham: Cinematographer to Watch

Variety features the cinematographer for the Golden Compass, Henry Braham, among its top ten cinematographers to watch this year. “For Braham, the pic’s major challenges sprung from its heavy reliance on visual effects. “Certain movies you can work on in near isolation,” he says, “but this type of moviemaking has to be collaborative. And because it’s a completely imaginary world, everything needs to be thought through and make sense, so that the audience isn’t distracted by the way it looks, but rather excited by it.” Read more.

Alternative Responses to Criticism

Aside from those voices who allege that a “pro-atheist stealth campaign” is being mounted by Philip Pullman and New Line Cinema, other bloggers have spoken out to defend Pullman and His Dark Materials. Today, the official film blog posted an open letter by Philip Nel, a professor of English children’s literature at Kansas State University, in response to Snopes’ page on the Golden Compass.

Donna Freitas, a blogger at the religion and pop culture blog Idol Chatter, writes two articles on meeting Philip Pullman on his American tour and why Christians shouldn’t fear the trilogy. Freitas is a professor of religion and is co-authoring a new guide book on His Dark Materials with Jason King. The book, entitled “Killing the Imposter God: Phillip Pullman’s Spiritual Imagination in His Dark Materials,” will look at the series’ religious themes and challenge its notions of God. Read more.

Tamagotchi, Battling Bears & Figures

Play.com have listed several previously announced and some new pieces of merchandise for The Golden Compass. There’s an “Interactive Alethiometer Shaped Digi Daemon” – essentially a Tamagotchi in a small plastic alethiometer; “Battling Bear” toys for Iorek and Ragnar; plus figures for several characters from the film. International Round-Up

French magazine Cine Live features The Golden Compass this month and includes an interview with the film’s director, Chris Weitz. You can view scans of the cover and article over at Elbakin. Meanwhile, Italian fansite Torre Degli Angeli have uploaded scans from the Italian edition of The World of the Golden Compass – including some concept art for Citagazze.
