Armored Bears Conquer Myspace

To further promote The Golden Compass ahead of its December 7th release date, New Line appear to have bought out the front-page of Myspace for a period of time. Upon logging in to the US site, Myspace members are now treated to a warring display of the two principal armored bears from the movie, Iorek and Ragnar (Iofur). $50 million in marketing and promo support

Variety has posted an article on the marketing side of New Line’s upcoming adaptation of the Golden Compass. $50 million has been committed to marketing via blue chip brands alone, not to mention merchandise contracts. The studio estimates that these promotion efforts, which exceed those for Lord of the Rings, will be worth $120 million. ‘”It’s definitely the most important property we’ve had since ‘Lord of the Rings,'” said Rolf Mittweg, New Line’s proxy and chief operating officer of worldwide distribution and marketing.’ Expect to see these branded items outside America and the United Kingdom as well. Branded Coke cups will be seen worldwide, and Toyota will launch its Noah minivan under the name in Japan. Read more.

“Everything I’ve ever learned in the last 35 years”

Elizabeth Snead of the Los Angeles Times spoke to Ruth Myers, costume designer for the Golden Compass, after she was named to take the Costume Designers Guild Career Achievement Award this coming February. Oscar-nominated for her work on L.A. Confidential and Emma, Myers describes her vision for the costumes of the L-world: “We really pushed all the boundaries to create a world that looks familiar, but unfamiliar. We mixed styles from different eras and cultures, and handmade over 2,000 costumes.” Read more.
