His Dark Materials Sales Surge

The huge publicity machine of The Golden Compass movie is driving greatly increased sales of Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials trilogy, Reuters reports. Over the last three months, the books have seen a 500% increase in sales, moving back into USAToday’s Top 50 list some ten years after publication. Interestingly, The Golden Compass (book) makes up around half of all HDM sales in the US. Read more.

The Guardian speaks to Dakota Blue Richards

The Guardian has caught up with Dakota Blue Richards to speak to her about the whole production experience as well as being a thirteen year old girl and hanging out with her friends. “”We’re a bit random and weird,” says Dakota, with a casual little shrug.” She even shares her Borat impression with Guardian writer Harriet Lane. IESB‘s Andy Duke reviews The Golden Compass, beginning with all of the production’s challenges. He also states, “[Philip Pullman] has ever reason to approve of Weitz’s effort.” Ain’t It Cool News‘ writers have given the film mixed-positive reviews but express the concerns of fans for missing elements. The Hollywood Reporter calls it, “A golden celebration of childhood fantasies,” predicting substantial box office promise. Emmanuel Levy gives it B: “[Weitz’s] “Golden Compass” lacks a sense of magic and wonder.” Variety‘s Tod McCarthy gives the film a lot of credit, but gives the film more mixed review: “impressively rendered but oddly uninviting.”
