Tourists to flock to Oxford

The Oxford Mail reported recently that Oxford tourism chief believes the impending release of The Golden Compass movie will push Oxford through the 10 million mark in terms of visitors to the city of Oxford in 2008, and that the film will help generate an extra 15 million GBP over the course of the year. The Golden Compass is not the first film to have generated additional tourism for the city, with parts of the Harry Potter films having been filmed in Oxford, as well as the Inspector Morse television series. The movie “suddenly seemed possible”

Newsweek‘s Devin Gordon discusses Chris Weitz’s work in the production of the New Line adaptation of The Golden Compass, including his departure from and return to the project. Pullman was instrumental in Weitz’s return, personally petitioning him to reconsider. “It suddenly seemed possible,” Weitz says. His fears didn’t vanish, but his years away from the film, during which he met his future wife, helped put matters in perspective.’ Gordon also delves into Toby Emmerich’s (head of production for New Line Cinema) interference in the recasting of Ian McKellen for armoured bear Iorek Brynison in place of British stage actor Nonso Anozie. The Telegraph recently profiled author Philip Pullman, detailing some of his life after Exeter College, Oxford and how His Dark Materials came to be. “He once considered abandoning The Amber Spyglass when the stationer who had been selling him the notepads he had used for years – narrow-lined, two holes – said the range had been replaced with a four-hole variety.” Read more.

The sketch also mentions, “he is writing a prequel to the trilogy which is expected in 2009,” which may indicate how The Book of Dust is progressing and what it might contain.
