The landing of Lyra and the Gyptians at Trollesund is being filmed at Chatham Historic Dockyard in Kent this week. Film crews have been seen constructing a mock building front and “brownwashing” some of the existing buildings, with prop barrels and other dockside paraphenalia about. The dockyard, lieing on the banks of the River Medway, saw the foundation of the Royal Navy under Henry VIII.

Furniture for Movie Sets
September 26, 2006
A Hampshire firm, Dalbergia Ltd., has won a contract to make furniture for several of The Golden Compass sets. Working with the film's designers, they created “a pair of flame-birch veneer sofas, with a set of four matching side tables as well as a pair of futuristically designed tub chairs and a stunning marquetry topped coffee table in satinwood, macasser ebony and weathered sycamore veneers.” The company's main business is the restoration of existing furniture and production of bespoke pieces for customers – film work is a new venture. The owner, Piers Paterson, said: “This was a really enjoyable and exciting project to work on and was an opportunity to showcase a range of our skills. The furniture has been well received by the film's designers and it looks fantastic on set.”
