Footage from Cannes
Posted on by Will

Fresh footage from The Golden Compass was shown at Cannes today and here’s our report from our man on the ground, Duncan. We’ll have more detailed thoughts on the new footage in the days to come.

”The footage was to be aired at the Olympia 1 theatre. I of course arrived early, expecting the place to be besieged. It was quite the opposite however; a modest A4 with the title ‘Golden Compass’ in black marker was pegged to the door, indicating the small line, where I took second place.”

”Everyone was frisked for electronic devices, then sat in the main theatre. As I waited and watched, I recognised many people. For example, none other than Lizo from Newsround sat behind me. Whilst I contained my glee, Chris Weitz swiftly introduced the footage, mentioning that the CGI was still being worked on by around 500 artists. At this point I’d like to state that this is from memory, my cunning plan to note things down backfired when the lights went off. Suffice to say when I came to write this report, my notepad read only ‘NL, London, Dinner, Holy and Gibble.’ ”

”Even more to the point, when Chris finished, the theatre darkened and an anticipating silence fell on the audience. The New Line icon glimmered on screen joined by a sweeping score (unsure if it was the soundtrack by Desplat, the film’s composer). Then suddenly we were in Lyra’s World.”

The Golden Compass at Cannes: report 1
Posted on by Will

New Line are revealing more of The Golden Compass movie at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, and BridgeToTheStars.net will be there to cover it all. Here’s our first report from Duncan, who is at the festival. We’ll have much more from Cannes in the days to come.

“The renowned Cannes Film Festival is upon us once more, but this year it carries a special significance to all you Sraffies world-wide. For a small glimpse of New Line’s adaptation to the first in our beloved trilogy is on show to a select few. So, I, Duncan Anderson, resident artwork designer, humbly took on the daunting task of travelling to Cannes. Where I endure topless beaches, high temperatures and exquisite cuisine to bring you an in depth report on The Golden Compass event.”

“My first task was to acquire the ticket promised which would allow me into the screening. New Line had set up shop at the prestigious Majestic Hotel, so I headed over there first. After besting the guardian stationed outside, I walked astride the Red Carpet (slightly to the side like, and behind a fence) that led into the building. As I traversed within I brushed shoulders with producers, directors, actors and others of similar importance, till at last I beheld the New Line ticket office. Wherein I acquired the ‘hottest ticket in Cannes’ (according to the Daily Telegraph), then sat down at the bar with a bottle of Corona costing only £6!”

“The first showing will take place at 7pm local time (6pm GMT), so I shall endeavour to bring you a report sometime tonight.”

“Watch this space.”

Mr Anderson, signing out.

IGN have taken a brief look at the upcoming game of The Golden Compass film, as part of Sega’s “Gamer’s Day.” The brief preview reveals that Sega had a representative on the movie’s set every day, allowing them to closely replicate the film’s sets and props. The game will feature 11 levels, 2 of which will be exclusive to the game, being locations taken from the book as well. There will be 3 playable characters – Lyra and Iorek have already been shown, and the third appears to be Pantalaimon. On the gameplay, IGN write, “Players won’t have to decipher the alethiometer’s symbols and answer its questions to proceed through the game, but if they do, they’ll receive an advantage over certain sections. Pan, on the other hand, will need to use his shape shifting abilities to maneuver around environmental challenges, while Iorek will need to use his size and clawing abilities to defeat opponents.” Read more.
