Posted on by Will

Nominees for the 80th Annual Academy Awards have been announced by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. The Golden Compass has earned two nominations in technical categories: Best Art Direction (Direction: Dennis Gassner; Set Decoration: Anna Pinnock) and Best Visual Effects (Michael Fink, Bill Westenhofer, Ben Morris and Trevor Wood). You can view the entire list of nominations here.

Oscar ceremony scheduled for Feb. 24 at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood. However, there are still fears that the on-going writers’ strike could cause the ceremony to be cancelled, with awards announced in similar fashion to the recent Golden Globes.

Alexandre Desplat has also been nominated for two awards for the film’s soundtrack by the International Film Music Critics Association. The score is up for awards in the categories of Best Score of 2007 and Best Original Score for a Fantasy/Science Fiction Film. Desplat also has five other nominations, including Film Composer of The Year (a full list of the nominations can be viewed here). The winners will be announced on Friday, February 15.

This is great. It is a fine film all round and wonderful to see the academy recognizing it. Let’s all hope for wins!

  2. ian says:

I thought I was going to see it on the “best origional screenplay” list due to New Line’s fatal,last-minute changes.

If this is true about bob shaye it’s not good for hdm sequels — hdm was his baby…

  4. Gabrobot says:

The Golden Compass wasn’t Bob Shaye’s baby, it was Deborah Forte’s. Bob Shaye was the bastard who ****ed it up right at the end of production. He’s also the one responsible for the problems between New Line and Peter Jackson. I for one am not sorry to see that he’s getting the boot.

  5. Grissha says:

If Jeff Bewkes recognized that it was Shaye and Lynne who made the unfortunate decisions which wasted such a promising movie just at the last few months of production, and if it’s true, good riddance.

But abort the trilogy instead of exploring (properly, next time) its immense potential in the sequels and using it to mend the (pretty obvious) flaws of The Golden Compass wouldn’t be less obtuse.
In fact, considering that the international box-office wasn’t bad, the first movie gathered more fans and potential audience to the second (which would be cheaper to produce and- probably- far more compensative than Golden Compass in box-office as well, especially if they don’t repeat the mistakes), not to make the sequels would be utterly stupid.

Let’s wait for New Line’s official word, but I don’t believe they would be that coward.

    Hey!! its a good thing…

Warner brothers is the studio which makes Harry Potter and so of course warner bro will want another success like harry potter coz thats comin gto a end! they obviously know it did well (overseas) so they possibly will make the subtle knife!!!

They of course won’t be as stupid as New Line and give it such a HUGE budget and then basically only show the audience half of the footage they shot (what a waiste of money and a longer waste of time for fans wanting to watch the film)!!! so they give about 100 budget and market it well and a success is definate!!!

Have you ever heard of problems with the Harry Potter filmmakers and Warner??? I haven’t!!

So maybe Chris weitz (a big IF) can do the 2nd with warner and do a film he wants to!!!

NEW LINE is gone!!! good!!! they expected too much from hdm and thought they were the top studio with lotr but now they learnt a BIG lesson!!!!!

    That article is so rude!!!

  8. daemon_light says:

Yeah,I’m with Grissha… not making the sequels would be a very bad move. Hopefully these nominations will strengthen DVD sales… they’ll at least be able to say Nominated for 2 academy awards on the box now! 😀

  9. Jay Raskin says:

I just saw the film last night and was dazzled by it. I can’t wait for the sequel.

It is not the filmmaker’s fault that gangs of religious crackpots organized a successful boycott of the film in the United States. Fortunately United States theater revenue is only one stream of income for a movie. I expect its DVD sales will be terrific. Almost everybody who saw the movie and loved it will buy it and those who were intimidated from going to the theaters because of the boycott will get a chance to see it.
