Philip Pullman has written a piece in the Sunday Times, hosts of this year’s Oxford Literary Festival beginning 20 March, “revealing his feelings at the prospect of seeing His Dark Materials on screen.” In his first in-depth reflections on film progress outside his less-than-monthly newsletter, he discusses the possibilities of storytelling in film (“As a matter of fact, from a storytelling point of view, the novel and the film aren’t so different”), Tom Stoppard’s original screenplay, and his hopes for the cast and production. Thanks to WEN for the tip. Read more.

His thoughts on Nicole Kidman and the film itself gave me goosebumps and made me even more excited then I already was.
great writers can say exactly what they want to say in the small time given, i’m looking forward too this film so much!
i’m glad about how they are handline the daemons “less is more”
“Maybe a walkon part” – Does that mean we’ll see PP in a cameo?!!!
It makes me excited to hear Pullman’s excitement.
Is it December yet?
I still don’t know whether I want to see the movie. I know I won’t be as good as separating it from the book as Pullman seems to be.
And PS you should have seen the spazz attack I had when I saw the new layouts. I’ve been visiting this site for *years* and was just completely shocked. They’re very nice, though. Congrats to whoever designed them!
wow lovin the funky new layout!!!!!!!
Wow. Isn’t he just such a beautiful writer. He can make anything interesting. And he’s also humble, too. I really hope I can go to Oxford to see this presentation thingy next week. Anyone else going?

It’s reassuring to hear that he is this optimistic about the movie. Hopefully we are as impressed by the film as he was.
By the way, gorgeous new layout, BTTS! I love it.
You’re kidding?! I had no idea that Tom Stoppard wrote the original screenplay! I just went to see his Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead at the library theater about a week back. Crazy stuff.
