IGN have taken a brief look at the upcoming game of The Golden Compass film, as part of Sega’s “Gamer’s Day.” The brief preview reveals that Sega had a representative on the movie’s set every day, allowing them to closely replicate the film’s sets and props. The game will feature 11 levels, 2 of which will be exclusive to the game, being locations taken from the book as well. There will be 3 playable characters – Lyra and Iorek have already been shown, and the third appears to be Pantalaimon. On the gameplay, IGN write, “Players won’t have to decipher the alethiometer’s symbols and answer its questions to proceed through the game, but if they do, they’ll receive an advantage over certain sections. Pan, on the other hand, will need to use his shape shifting abilities to maneuver around environmental challenges, while Iorek will need to use his size and clawing abilities to defeat opponents.” Read more.

an inspired game from an inspired trilogy, seems so to me. i really like the idea of optional alethiometer reading. symbols are so interesting and metaphoric, it will be interesting to decipher them. i wonder if maybe children lyra’s age would have an easier time than adults…because of their childhood purity plus simplicity and lack of complicated thought.
Sounds good, but first I want to see clips and stuff because most movie tie-ins aren’t very good. >.>
Also, I wonder how Pantalaimon’s gameplay will look like.. won’t Lyra be following him around the whole time since he can’t stray away from her too far?
I’m not sure if Pantalaimon is actually a separate character or not. It’s mentioned that players “use” their daemon so solve puzzles etc, so it seems more that he’s a subset of Lyra.. Who knows.
i like that the characters are limited. it works within the idea about “this is a story about lyra.” but i guess one can’t avoid adding in the armoured bear character if the armoured bear exists.
I guess if you were playing a pan, you would be given only a certain area to work in, and lyra would stand somewhere close.
im glad that they havent made Lork Lyra’s “protective daemon” like how they said in the article.at least SOME people are getting it right.
*lorek
-not “lork”
lol-sorry
Wow, the game is sounding better and better all the time. From what I have read it sounds like you control Pan and Lyra sort of at the same time. One article said Pan is used to help Lyra get to hard to reach places and to scan the areas for clues.
Originally I was more interested in playing as Iorek but the more I read the more I want to play as Lyra & Pan!
Hopefully we will see more of the game soon.
If they’re staying accurate to the books, then Pan will HAVE to function as a subset to Lyra rather than independently. From what I’ve read, there will likely be an arrangement similar to other games in which the lead characters can be “shuffled” to acheive different objectives.
Still, if the series of games ever gets as far as “the amber spyglass”, that could open up some interesting gameplay from a daemon’s perspective 🙂
I’m sorry, but as much as I’d love this to be a great, intelligent game worth of the story it’s just not going to happen. The latest screenshots are atrocious across all the formats and show it be nothing more than standard action adventure with Iorek hitting some stuff and a few puzzles. I still hold some hope for the movie but not for this cash-in.
Sorry.
