Ian McKellen voicing Iorek?
Posted on by Ian

BridgetotheStars.net community member Queste Oscure Materie report that an Italian VFX technician working on visual effects for The Golden Compass movie has disclosed that Ian McKellen will be providing the voice for Iorek Brynison. This part has previously been thought to be that of British actor Nonso Anozie.

QOM’s source also reports that the rumour which appeared on Christopher Lee’s official fansite regarding a possible cameo appearance by the veteran actor may well be true. The source writes, “[Lee] plays a member of the Magisterium: a grumpy man dressed in dark colours, whom we see sitting at a table with another character, whose daemon is a panther.”

Additionally, it is also reported that the final scenes in the film have been, at the request of the producers (rather than the director), significantly altered. This has, apparently, left post production teams running very late – meaning that they have to work flat out from now until the end of October.

(Real) Homer, are your sources usually correct? Where do you get your info from? Do you know if Ian McKellen is voicing Iorek or not? Thanks.

  2. Luis says:

Sorry to disappoint you all, but I think that by “last scenes”, the moron from New Line means “the last scenes to be edited for the movie”.

And as for McKellen: if his voice is so articulated as people are complaining (!) over here, why the hell won´t he be able to do a dull voice, such as you think Iorek´s supposed to have?

  3. Homer says:

No, Fake-Homer, I don’t know what you mean. Please cut the BS.

This is the ending of the movie as it exists right now. I hope to god they change it back, but I doubt they have the time now. Still, I do hope the fans create a s***storm sometime soon, cuz you never know… it might work.

I saw the trailer last week, and have to say it looked really good. They still had not changed it to reflect all these changes, but I would imagine they will take out some stuff before they release it.

What the trailer definitely does confirm, though, is all these casting rumors swirling about, McKellen, Bates, Christopher Lee. It also lists (I think, my memory is a bit fuzzy) Kristin Scott Thomas as playing Serfina’s daemon.

Also, there’s a new action-sequence near the start of the movie where Daniel Craig breaks into Jordan College. You’ll see some glimpses of that in the trailer.

  4. Mockingbird says:

Delete the first Homer’s post, Ian! He’s trolling and getting everyone too excited. 😀

  5. Homer says:

Mockingbird, if you’re talking about deleting my posts (damn you, Fake-Homer, for causing all this confusion!), then why?

You’ll find some pretty specific stuff in my latest post which hasn’t, as far as I know, been mentioned elsewhere yet. Just wait until the trailer is released for verfication.

    Anyway, off to sleep.

  6. Homer says:

Oh yeah, speaking of sleeping reminded me.

Ian McKellen is totally fine as Iorek, but sounds a little… tired. And quite recognizable. Anozie was better.

  7. holl says:

Once Pullman sold the rights to the book that was it. Id say he has nothing to do with the movie. The makers are just being generous in letting him have a say.

This is what Ive been led to believe to happen when a novelist sells the rights to their novel anyway.

  8. Luis says:

    Shit it!
I think that a suspended end such as Lyra crossing the worlds is far better than a far-fetched close-up take that ends the story!

    Sugar-coated!
What these guys want people to watch? Only what they think is more likely to be sucessfull financially?

  9. tato says:

i just cant wait more for this movie, everyday this rumours. i really dont believe it. so, tomorrow they will release a new trailer, we´ll see. i think this is totally FAKE.

homer, tell us MORE. so the movie will end like this?lyra sleeping?oh GOD, please enter here and tell us they will not do THIS anymore, 🙁

The above thread serves to remind me that of the ‘balance’ between business interest and artistic integrity.
A novelist has greater freedom to explore ideas, being a one-man-band (until he wants to get the book printed and distributed). Feature films are collaborative, and expensive, the more expensive, the more likely they are to compromise ‘art’ – in this case, the book upon which the film is based.
Having said all that, I think it’s ridiculous to employ famous actors in roles where they are invisible, e.g., Ian McKellen as Iorek Byrnison, and when there is a wealth of vocal talent around.
Interesting too, this is a film alleged to be influenced by ‘Star Wars’; many leading members of the cast were not well-known at the time.
Is there something to be said for tighter budgets?

  13. Goblin says:

Homer, I agree with you, it is good that the writers are adding twists to the films it keeps people interested. After all Lyra and Roger are best friend and it would be great to add more fantasy and excitement with them going on journeys into un-known worlds and maybe even Lyra get kidnapped and Roger saves her and in the last film he could sacrifice his life to save her. This would keep us all on the edge of our seats.
