Golden Compass trailer attached to Pirates of the Caribbean
Posted on by

USA Today have reported that the first public trailer for The Golden Compass will be shown from May 25th onwards, attached to the third Pirates of the Caribbean film. We’ve contacted New Line to see if they will confirm this, but the timing – shortly after Cannes – and the somewhat shared demographic of the two films makes it a very likely possibility. USA Today also featured a new Golden Compass poster in their print edition, which is shown left. Click the image or click here to view it up close.

  1. aimee says:

It’s NOT a daemon bodyguard. It’s part of a person’s soul outside their body in a parallel world where some things are the same and some things are different.

And most importantly Iorek is NOT Lyra’s daemon! Pantalaimon is.

  2. Gabzie says:

Uwa~ teaser poster looks great! :3 But yeah, that’s a really stupid mistake they made in the article, aimee. =S

Besides, where IS Pan-chan on the poster? I can barely see him. o_o

  3. Yokata says:

The trailer is attached to Pirates of the Caribbean? What delightful news. I was already ecstatic about this movie, At World’s End, but rest assured, now I am adamant upon seeing the earliest showing possible.

  4. aimee says:

I might have overreacted, I do love the poster and I hope there is a nice picture of Pan in it, I’m sure there will be =)

I’m very excited for the trailer. At World’s End is a movie I don’t want to miss either.

  5. Roronoa Zoro says:

now I wonder who scanned that article…;). Anyhoo, I really can’t wait for this. I can’t believe we’ll finally be able to see a trailer. And I’m definitely going to the midnight showing.

  6. Gabzie says:

Lol, forgot to mention the teaser trailer. XD;; I can’t wait for it either!

And I hope I can get to see At World’s End when it first comes to cinemas. Not just for the teaser trailer, the movie too! XP

  7. Corsair of Umbar says:

They had to add the part where Lyra eats a Kit Kat bar for an advertising tie-in.

  8. Blossom says:

What sort of demented people bring out a film in May. Hello, exams…i guess the trailer will make it to the internets the same day though?

  9. Rachael says:

    AWESOME!!!!
I’m going to the POTC 3 Midnight opening already
    that makes it even better!

  10. Vampt Vo says:

Yeah, how about that. As I would expect, the press screws up the description of Pullman’s world. They could have at least not called Iorek Lyra’s daemon. I could live with the whole “daemon bodyguard” thing.

As for you, Aimee, I don’t think that your way of describing a daemon would be very easy for readers to understand.

(Is Pan in there? It’s hard to tell with such a small picture, so I’ll have to check when the fell-sized poster is released)

  11. Will says:

To be fair, if you’ve researched that the books are about people with animal familiars, and there’s a photo of a girl with a bear, it’s hard not to make the mistake. Not sure why people are wondering about Pan here either; he could very easily be small and curled up somewhere.

Heather – yeah, I’m sure we’ll see the trailer pop up. Again. :p Pirates presumably comes out in the US first too, so people elsewhere won’t want to have to wait.

  12. Aeschylus the Ocelot says:

I’m happy to see I wasn’t the only one angry about the mistake. I understand HDM world might be complicated, but it seems like a pretty big mistake.
As for the exams, Blossom, go to the midnight showing. The excitement from the trailer and the Pirates movie will keep you up all night so you can study. That’s my plan anyway! 🙂

  13. Skye says:

Well, it’s a Friday night… Do you have exams on Saturday?

I’d already guessed that the trailer would be attached to PotC, as soon as someone said we’d get the official trailer in May. It’s the most likely big-name candidate. Definitely seeing it the first day!

Does anyone here work at a movie theater? I’m planning on asking the theater in my home town if I can have this poster when they’re done with it. Will they just give it to you? Has anyone done this before?

  14. Gabriel says:

My best friend’s mom runs a theater! I’ll ask him if he can ask her about that.

  15. Kinders says:

Glad to see that they haven’t yet resorted to the boring old headshot montage. : ) Can anyone make out what the text at the top reads?

  16. Chris says:

It says ‘There are worlds beyond our own, The compass will show the way’. A better picture of the poster has appeared on ebay…can’t see Pan though :o(

  17. silvertongue says:

i have a feeling tht they are goin too miss out some of the most charastic parts of the book

  18. Blossom says:

Pirates comes out here the same day as the US, so technically we get it first. I’m pretty sure with the Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix trailer, they released it on the Happy Feet website at about the same time as it was due to be shown in cinemas in the US. So the same might happen with this.

  19. WEN says:

Oh, Pirates. Lol. I guess it’s a good move from a commercial point of view but I think I’ll just wait for the trailer to show up online or something.
And yah, that’s such a blatant mistake about Lyra’s daemon. Writers, remember to RESEARCH! Read, don’t just look at the pictures =)

  20. Spidabait says:

Is it just me or does Iorek’s mouth look HUUUGE!?
I guess thats just the way armoured bears look.

I bet we’ll be seing other posters like this one soon, probably ones like the aircrafts, gyptian boats, more daemons probably…

and lots of that glamour celeb Nicole Kidman, who’ll undoubtedly be promoting “Golden Compass” style gowns for the December 2007 VOGUE!

  21. luis says:

i wouldn´t trust this piece very much.
since the writer doesn´t even know that iorek´s not a daemon! (hihi, just kidding).

i´ll see pirates of caribbean just because of the trailer!!! the pirates will kick ass because of a trailer, my god! (i hope in brazil they´ll keep the same trailers as in north america and uk!)

  22. Ardanawen says:

Luis, don’t keep your hopes so high. in non-English speaking countries mostly they change trailers. Here at Mexico, when Happy Feet was released, only a few cinemas showed the Harry Potter trailer.
Well, I guess I’ll see PotC anyway, looks like it’s gonna be good.
Such a stupid mistake…”Protective daemon ice bear Iorek”…

    AHHH Can’t wait till december!!!

  23. Will Silvertongue says:

Can’t wait till it comes out read the books through FIVE TIMES. Though they will probably miss out the best parts.

Stupid mistake saying Lyra’s “Protective daemon ice bear Iorek” and can’t see pan in the picture. I’m gonna try and see the midnight one but my mum and dad probably won’t let me. “NO NO NO It is to late for you you, have stayed up late enough reading tose books” LOL

  24. Robyn says:

i’ll bet this is only in the USA though, and not here in britain 🙁

  25. Evie says:

Oh yay! I was already jumping up and down whilst waiting for POTC 3, but this is going to make it even way better, and i didn’t think that was possible! 😀

  26. Homer says:

From what I heard, the trailer is being released in high-def Quicktime, as well as ordinary Quicktime for those with computers too weak to play HD stuff. I imagine they’ll release it for iPod’s too.

  27. luis says:

    well…
i can´t pretend i haven´t felt bad after this piece of info provided by ardanawen… dang it! i wanted it so badly! i´ll contact the studio! i´ll make a fuss!

… by the way: the writer could say that lyra´s iorek´s daemon and she would make a lesser fault, i think!

  28. Homer says:

Oh yeah, I should probably add that the trailer looks pretty freakin’ sweet, although much of it will seem familiar if you saw the leaked reel a while back. Many of the same shots are in both of them, but this time much more finished as far as special effects goes (but still some ways off).

  29. Gabzie says:

^ Huh??? O__O You’ve already seen it? Is there any talking in it? Do daemons talk? Does Dakota say anything? Spit it out, pleease! D:

  30. aimee says:

who is Homer and why does he claim to have seen the trailer and why doesn’t his link work? These questions and more will be answered in a theater near you.

  31. Alex says:

aaaaand I’m going to see Pirates at midnight

  32. Ashe says:

Homer, how have you already seen the trailer?
You also mention that the effects in the trailer are much more polished but still not 100 percent. Does that mean that they are going to release a trailer with unfinished effects?

  33. Homer says:

My link didn’t work because it seems the “Website”-field defaults (at least for me) to “http://deleted/”.

Who am I? Why, the father of Bart, Lisa and Maggie of course. ; )

Dakota does talk as does most of the other cast members. Do the daemons? I have to say I don’t even remember (my memory isn’t what it used to be!), which probably means they don’t. It’s been a couple of months since last time I saw it (March, I think, sometime before the leaked reel at least). It’s probably been refined since. Daemons are looking pretty darned nice – I love the golden monkey! You’ll see him in the teaser.

When I saw it, it started with a looong (≈30 sec), slightly cheesy thing with the One Ring spinning in the air and slowly fading into a compass before landing in snow. All while text comes on saying stuff like “From the studio that brought you The Lord of the Rings” yada yada yada…

  34. Homer says:

Ashe, pretty much every trailer ever made has unfinished effects.

Special effects are never really finished, as they *always* can be improved. So, naturally, they’re going to keep tweaking and polishing all aspects of the movie until it’s released.

  35. Ashe says:

Ok, thank you for clearing that up! You’ve made me really excited now for the trailer.

  36. Will says:

Updated with that newer poster; ta again Chris.

  37. managoddess says:

YAAAAAAAAAAAYYYY!!!!! Im so excited!i just cant hide it!la la laa!

  38. Mr Anderson says:

Can’t say that it’s shocking how many people associate ‘Homer’ with the Simpsons character and not the Greek Poet. But from what I gather, Homer is our elusive New Line informant who pops up to give inside info now and then.

It is understandable why New Line are playing the Lord of the Rings card. His Dark Materials is not as universally known as Tolkiens Masterpiece, and with the reception that Jackson’s Adaptations received, tempting audiences with the old ‘They did that, and it was really good, so this new thing by them must be as good’ is a sound plan.

Of course, we the educated audience see through it with contempt, but the cinemagoer who hasn’t read the books likely won’t.

  39. Lyra_B_S says:

I prefer the Greek poet (cause I am Greek)

  40. Will says:

Updated yet again with another, huge view of the poster. No Pan in sight at all. The tagline is:

“There are worlds beyond our own – the compass will show the way”

  41. Norb says:

Wow, the poster looks really amazing! Where do you get it from?
I hope the Poster will release in HQ soon too.

    Best wishes from Germany
    Norb

  42. Gabzie says:

2 Will: Pan is there! Where DBR is holding the Alethiometer, he’s there resting on her arm in mouse form! ^^ They should have made him a bit bigger though so he’s easily seen. =/

  43. Homer says:

    Doh! I feel so un-edumacated… ; )

  44. Lee_Scoresby says:

haha, yeah, im seeing the midnight show because of this

  45. Lee_Scoresby says:

might i point out, however, that the way lyra is standing is impossible

  46. Will says:

Gabzie – I’ve got the poster in a slightly larger resolution, and there really is no Pan there. The folds on Lyra’s white coat are what’s seeming like a mouse I think.

  47. Daniel says:

Why do I see no “His Dark Materials” on that poster? Has it been ditched?

  48. Gabzie says:

2 Will: Yeah I saw the larger one too and noticed I made a pretty big mistake. T_T Oh well, I hope the next poster(s) have Pan on them.

  49. Homer says:

Don’t worry, Gabzie. You’ll get a few peeks at Pan (in various forms) in the upcoming teaser trailer, which is certainly coming out sooner than the next poster.

Am I the only one that occasionally think of Pan as Pants? Sacrilicious and kinda silly, I know.

  50. Aimee says:

I think of Pan as peter pan, the symbol of everlasting childhood. and when i think of pan’s labyrinth, i think of the golden compass.
