Clip from cut ending to The Golden Compass
Posted on by Ian

The Golden Compass movie had its ending controversially cut and little is known about what we might have seen other than what we have seen in the trailers and teasers released. However, The Golden Compass video game contains clips from the movie, including the moment when Lyra arrives at Lord Asriel’s laboratory on Svalbard with Roger in tow. You can watch the clip here, or just below.

I haven’t reached this point yet, but there were another couple of unseen clips in the game, so I was half-expecting to see this ending. Just goes to show how late in the day the change was.

For anyone who hasn’t played the videogame, the Eva Green-like voice-over is added to film clips.

  2. northernlights2 says:

I don’t want to watch the clips so could someone who has watched them tell how far they go? Like do they go all the way to the bridge?

  3. advo says:

Daniel Craig is scary as Lord Asriel! Man I wish they have shown the ending, it would have been such a *GASP* scene that it would make the bear fight appear funny. I wonder if it will have as good an effect for the beginning of TSK, if that’ll even be made?

  4. molotov says:

Being honest, the Roger “betrayl” didn’t quite hit home with me in the books. Sure, I “got” what was going on but it didn’t capture me on an emotional level until seeing the “bringing my father what he needs” line on Scoresby’s Aeroballoon, and now this.

Roll on The Subtle Knife. Fingers, legs, toes, arms and eyes crossed that it enters production.

  5. matt says:

It’s a shame that NLC butchered CW’s vision, and how!
I’d like to bet that CW has a print of his cut of the movie with 99.9% of the post production done.
I just hope we get to see it some time, that’s all.

  6. Aurone says:

Keep your finger’s crossed that a Director’s cut happens with the DVD, and that might boost sales enough for New Line to do Subtle Knife and not be idiots with it.

  7. Green Ink says:

Seeing this just shows how idiotic New Line was to be worried about the ending. That scene is pretty close to perfect, and it’s agonising to think how the complete ending would have made the film better.
It would have been an ending that people remembered, and in many ways it’s far less of a cliffhanger than the one they decided on.

  8. Ben/Hoobits says:

It seems as if from the voice over and Lyra’s line about rescuing Asriel from the bears, Bolvangar and Svalbard were in their original order for principal photography. Shame really.

  9. Mockingbird says:

Oh man, first Weitz’s original script, now this, why don’t they just finish it off with releasing a clip of Iorek’s speeches with Anozie’s voicework, and just let us slit our wrists in peace. 😛

If only we had a bigger fanbase, we’d certainly have a director’s cut in the works. As is, I don’t know.

  10. Gabrobot says:

I don’t think a director’s cut is that unlikely…New Line had great success with the LotR extended editions, and if Kingdom of Heaven can get a director’s cut The Golden Compass certainly can.

Oh, and yes this footage is amazing. I think I take back what I said about the chopped ending being an alright decision…with an ending this good I don’t think it would matter that it ends on a down note.

  11. Witch-girl says:

Was that Eva Green narrarating the final scene?

  12. jessia says:

very well done mr. weitz. with the hindsight of having read the books, i was very pleased with the eeriness and foreboding nature of that scene. i’m kind of excited to see roger die (morbid, i know.. but it must’ve been strange for the actor to film his character’s death and not get to see it on the big screen as part of the finished product).

  13. namster says:

I know what you mean, Gabrobot. I actually wouldn’t mind it if they had released an ending with muted “controversial” exposition with only music playing instead of dialogue, and then have Lyra remember all the controversial bits in flashbacks in The Subtle Knife or something. Really, that’d be fine with me. Anything to see the ending. Really.

And test audiences thinking that Lyra walked into Heaven or something? Fine with me. No problem. As long as we had this ending…

    “I DIDN’T SEND FOR YOU!”

“…oh Iorek, I beg you, go quick, my dear!”

  14. Skye says:

You’re not the only morbid one, jessia.

(Also, was that green screen out the window?)

  15. Skye says:

    Controversial? Do you mean conversational?

  16. namster says:

No, I meant “controversial” Skye, because Weitz had to compromise on the religious bits. Which would have made Lord Asriel’s speech kind of, um, empty, because he doesn’t talk really about anything else except Genesis, and at this point he can’t just recycle Nicole Kidman’s speech a second time. But really, if New Line had released the ending with muted dialogue or something, I wouldn’t mind.

Also, the acting is superb even without post-production voice dubbing.

  17. jessia says:

even if the religious references were compromised, asriel should still have been able to carry out his terrible experiment for the sake of the narrative. unless cittagazze was all white castles and clouds, i’m wondering how the test audience could possibly have thought she was going to heaven.

“it’s all right roger, we’re safe now.” – that line was delivered very well i think… it’s perfect for the kind of guilt lyra’s meant to carry until the land of the dead.

WG, i’m pretty sure that was eva green narrating. i feel like it wouldn’t be used in the actual film though… just the video game between level/sequence/thingers.

  18. leia says:

Wonderful scene! I’d love to see it at the ending of TGC. There’s really lovely music in this clip is it official soundtrack?

  19. Elvenstar says:

Great! Why doesnt Chris release the REAL film on youtube or upload using rapidshare or smth:) Great music, great acting and great ending. Come! holy director’s cut!

    > “Why doesnt Chris release the REAL film on youtube or upload using rapidshare or smth:)”

Believe me Elvenstar, in a parallel universe somewhere, it’s been done. 🙂 Now all I need is a re-eally sharp knife and someone who knows how to cut a window into that other *amazing* universe.

  22. Skye says:

Has anyone played the Wii version of this game?
Nintendo Power only gave it 4 out of 10, and I’m beginning to think that I shouldn’t have asked for it for Christmas…

  23. Lady Sylvia says:

    I saw the ending.

I doubt very much that adding it would have added more box office for the film in the U.S. And considering that it looks as if a sequel WILL NOT be made, I say that it’s a good thing that it was cut in the end.

  24. Namster says:

    > I saw the ending.

What do you mean you “saw the ending”? Just this clip, …or more?

  25. LadySylvia says:

    Both.

  26. FrumpyB says:

I’d have liked the ending, it’d be more moving, even if it did leave you a little down. I don’t see the same need to have a film finish on an up beat triumph. I don’t recall the need to rescue Roger being so strong in the books as the film, to then bump him off would be a bit devastating.
Given that gap is running a competition to be an extra, and comments on the writing of the other scripts it seems like they’re moving on 2 and 3. No?

  27. Namster says:

Lady Sylvia, do you mean to say that you’ve seen the entire deleted ending? I’m curious and mystified.

  28. Nevermore says:

Lady Sylvia, do you have a link or anything for us to see the full ending?
